Job Description
The Academic Advising Counselor organizes College-wide processes and procedures related to academic advising. The Counselor helps to manage a centralized advising system that serves as the training and development hub for all academic advisors. This position implements College-wide advising policies and integrates transactional and transformational advising methods into consistent workplace practices across various departments and programs. This position reports directly to the Director of Academic Advising. Essential Duties Summary
• 35% – Assists in the implementation and maintenance of a campus-wide, web-based advising system to improve student persistence and degree completion. Provides first-line technical support to ensure continuity and upkeep of online appointments and calendaring, shared advisor notes, electronic referrals, degree mapping, and early alerts for students identified as having academic difficulties.

• 5% – Participates in various departmental meetings and supports key functions related to transactional advising such as tracking statistics, proper file documentation, strategic and academic planning, and program assessment. Understands and monitors institutional benchmarks and supports all student persistence initiatives and efforts.

• 30% – Advises individual students identified as on-track to ensure timely degree completion. Helps off-track students assess problems underlying academic difficulties and refers them to the appropriate department for further support and/or counseling. Meets with students to set goals and develop action plans for academic success.

• 10% – Provides proactive and timely outreach, referrals, and interventions within the student population through a variety of communication methods.

• 10% – Provides information on all aspects of course sequencing, academic statuses, registration procedures, and College policies on academic eligibility, readmission processes, and exceptions to registration regulations.

• 10% – Identifies advising needs across academic divisions. Develops departmental success strategies for students on academic probation.
· Performs other related duties as assigned. Must be responsive to work-related phone calls and emails during non-business hours on occasion.

Required Qualifications

A minimum of 3 years’ experience as an academic advisor in an accredited higher education setting is required. Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree in Student Development or Higher Education preferred. Other required qualifications include: demonstrated knowledge of and experience implementing best practices in academic advising; demonstrated experience in program development and evaluation. Individual must have excellent written and oral communication skills, a proven ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with faculty and staff, familiarity with and ability to use technology in the everyday work environment as well as to facilitate the academic advising experience, and the ability to work well without close supervision, meet deadlines and handle confidential information in a professional manner.
