Position Description

The Office of Graduate Admissions and Student Services at the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) provides comprehensive information about SEAS graduate programs and admissions procedures to prospective domestic and international graduate students and provides professional advising services to the current SEAS graduate student body. This position reports to the Associate Director of Graduate Advising and Student Services. This position provides integral academic support and direction for students navigating their academic journey. This position serves as an information hub for students and provides internal and external resources and opportunities for students. This position assists students with navigating transitions, exploring options, overcoming challenges, and developing academic plans by individual appointments and group sessions. This role masters knowledge and understanding of GW rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and academic curriculum, tracks and manages student records, develops, maintains, and enhances internal projects that further student success, and enhances programming for specific student populations in order to ensure student success and support students’ individual/specific needs. This position supports events such as orientation and graduation, maintains student records from matriculation to graduation, and monitors and responds to student inquiries for transfer credit, leave of absence, and registration. This role may serve as a member of the various committees, which reviews applications and make admissions recommendations to the faculty. The Academic Advisor, Graduate Student Services professionally advises incoming and current SEAS graduate students and supports graduate recruiting and admissions efforts.


Responsibilities include:
• Provides one on one academic advising to incoming master’s and PhD students virtually and in person.
• Maintains student records in DegreeMAP and Banner, from matriculation to graduation. Monitors and responds to student inquiries for transfer credit, leave of absence, and registration.
• Develops and facilitates student orientation and pre-arrival programming designed to boost school-wide yield.
• Serves as a member of the admissions committee, which reviews applications and make admissions recommendations to the faculty.
• Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position

Required Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree preferred in an education, counseling, and/or social worker-related field. Knowledge of Engineering programs, program coordination, especially in the area of student engagement and retention. Strong student and faculty service orientation; highly organized. Proficiency in MS office, Banner, DegreeMAP, and records management.
