Position Description

The Vulcan Materials Academic Success Center (VMASC) provides academic support, in the form of tutoring, academic coaching, advising, and major exploration to the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s students. The VMASC staff also collaborates closely with students who are working to meet the application requirements of pre-health related programs and engineering programs. Candidates for this Academic Advisor II position will advise students, providing guidance and advice on course selection, program prerequisites, university policies, and academic success strategies. The ideal candidate will have experience working with students at the college level and the demonstrated ability to build a strong working relationship with them. Familiarity with federally mandated confidentiality guidelines, as well as the ability to accurately keep records and reports related to student retention is also required. In addition to their advising duties, the VMASC academic advisors assist with new student orientations and outreach events.


Advise a caseload of 150-200 students Monitor academic progress of assigned students. work collaboratively with other campus constituents. Participate in advising orientation session. Assist with promoting office during recruitment events. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in Counseling, Education or a related field and three (3) years of related experience required working with students in a higher education capacity.

Preferred Qualifications

The capacity to demonstrate patience and understanding of student needs beyond academics Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a fast paced office environment Strong verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills Ability to quickly learn and apply new information Experience working and mentoring college students. A professional background in student orientation, transition, retention, or academic success at the college level strongly preferred.
