Position Description

This is primarily an academic advisor position. The individual hired may teach up to 2 courses per semester during the academic year, depending on advising loads and expertise. More information about the program can be found in the web page https://inside.nku.edu/artsci/departments/biology.html These are academic year appointments with some summer orientation and advising duties covered by a separate stipend.

Duties

Academic Advisors in the NKU College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Biological Sciences advise students in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Neuroscience majors. In addition, participation in orientation and recruiting events, advising luncheons, and NKU Master Advisor training is required. A commitment to work effectively with diverse student populations and first generation students is required. Candidates should expect to work in a fast-paced environment; learn and communicate continually changing and detailed information and maintain accurate, up-to-date student records for a large caseload. This position requires collaboration with advisors, faculty, and success partners on campus to create a welcoming and supportive network for students.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

A Master’s degree in biology or related field is required. A commitment to work effectively with diverse student populations and first generation students is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred candidates should:
- Have several years of experience related to academic advising
- Be familiar with advising and student management software systems
- Have a working knowledge of higher education policies and procedures that relate to student success
- Be able to articulate an understanding of student development theory
- Exhibit a strong commitment to delivery of high-quality academic advising. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills; attention to detail and exceptional communication skills will be valued for this position.
