Position Description

The College of Arts and Sciences at Rockhurst University invites applications for a full-time Academic Advisor. Rockhurst has a growing undergraduate nursing population, and the duties of this position will focus primarily on the advising of pre-nursing and pre-health undergraduates. This advisor will also support general advising and student success in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Duties

1. Academic advising, support, and tracking of First Time College (FTC) and transfer nursing students.
a. Provide one-on-one academic advising (including FTC pre-registration events);
b. Pre-build FTC student schedules in preparation for registration events;
c. Teach nursing sections of first year seminar course;
d. Coordinate with RU Admissions and the BSN program director to track student eligibility and awarding of “second-chance” direct-entry awarding program for current RU pre-nursing students (both first-time-college students and transfer students) after their first two semesters at Rockhurst;
e. Coordinate advising efforts with Saint Luke’s College of Health Sciences:
f. Support and coordinate academic advising for nursing students in transition;
g. Support Admissions efforts to recruit nursing students (e.g. attend events);
h. Maintain and update advising materials for pre-nursing students.

2. Provide support for the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) advising program.
a. Pre-health and general student advising (as available/needed);
b. Support faculty advisors;
c. Help manage enrollments of CAS course offerings;
d. Represent/liaison for CAS advising;
e. Serve as back-up for CAS Director of Academic Advising.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, social work, or related field
• Three years direct experience working with undergraduate academic advising
• Knowledge of academic advising principles, practices, and protocols
• Demonstrated skills and experience utilizing technology that supports effective academic advising practices
• Experience with student retention initiatives
• Experience working with diverse populations, including nontraditional students
• Ability to collaborate with faculty and staff across the university
• Strong organizational, decision-making, and critical thinking skills
• Effective communication skills (interpersonal, presentational, writing)

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in counseling, communication, higher education leadership, or related field
• Experience with new student orientation programs
• Experience advising in nursing/health care programs
• Experience with higher education assessment, analytics, and early alert systems
• College level teaching experience
• Familiar with Canvas or other learning management systems
• Understanding and appreciation of Jesuit education and liberal arts curriculum
