Position Description

The mission of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) is to improve the health of individuals and communities locally and globally through leadership and excellence in nursing education, research, practice, and service. We are seeking a professional Academic Advisor to work with our Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students. This is a new position and the incumbent will be expected to commit to building, implementing and maintaining a high level of holistic student experience, and, use technology, data driven decision-making, exceptional social intelligence, and integrated approach in all affairs related to the position and overall student success. This position will report to the DNP Academic Program Director and work collaboratively across JHSON and JHU. They will work with the DNP Academic Program Director and other faculty to actively contribute to strategic planning, decision-making, and any other relevant needs. Some internal stakeholders include: clinical placement, student affairs, career lab, financial aid, academic program management, and curriculum committee. The incumbent will work with peers and leadership on various projects, as a leader or individual contributor, internally or externally to our school.

Major area of responsibilities include: academic advising including plans of study, proactive student success advising, monitoring and action, graduation audits, organizational collaborations, management of people, projects and programs, and fiscal.

The incumbent will be immediately responsible for: acclimate to this new role and the school, academic advising for first year DNP students (about 250), evaluating the current state of academic advising for DNP students, developing and implementing systems, processes, programs, etc. to ensure a seamless, integrated, and holistic student experience.

In addition, and as assigned, the incumbent will take on serving or leading on committees, projects, etc. Due to the highly relational and customer-facing expectations of the position, the incumbent will be expected to flex between remote and on-campus work environment, evenings and weekends, and, some travel as needed. This is a new position for JHSON, and therefore we anticipate that during the incumbent’s first year, training and execution will happen simultaneously, and, adjustments will be made as necessary. Duties

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Comprehensive academic advising and student success:
Advising on policies and procedures, creating/updating plans of study, student success planning, registration, progression, graduation, student support services, etc.
Develop and/or implement proactive student success activities and communication with key stakeholders such as track coordinators, faculty directors, student affairs, etc.
Develop and document workflows processes within JHSON and with other JHU divisions for dual degree students.
Proactively address student needs and connect students to appropriate support.
Serve as an advocate for student success.
Adopt and practice a student support philosophy that develops a student and individual who is actively engaged and responsible for their success.
Expertly manage the fine balance between hand-holding and self-efficacy.
Technology management: develop, customize, document, and implement advising activities and systems and technologies used to enhance the student experience.
Develop and document workflows processes.
Be proficient and support other stakeholders in the use of technology and other digital tools.

Leadership, planning, project management and execution, and, collaborations: in collaboration with other functional areas and/or departments at JHSON and JHU, evaluate, create, and execute opportunities for successful student life cycle management; participate and/or lead student-centered activities such as graduations, open houses, orientations, etc.; initiate, lead or participate in workgroups, committees, etc.

Fiscal: develop and manage a budget.

Other needs: based on changing needs, be able and willing to pivot and shift direction and/or work on project as needed with a proactive, balanced, and educated manner.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory): Master’s Degree At least three years in progressively responsible experience in advising, counseling, coaching, mentoring

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in the healthcare field, with nursing students, or similar is highly preferred. Five years in progressively responsible experience in advising, counseling, coaching, mentoring adult learners in the healthcare field (nursing, medicine, PA, etc.) at the graduate level (doctoral students).
