Position Description

PURPOSE: The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Academic Advisor and Success Instructor position teaches and advises undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) and those in the Explorations program, including undecided and pre-engineering. Using a purposeful, holistic, and developmental approach, the Academic Advisor and Success Instructor guides students through the transition into the University and through the college major decision process while teaching, informing, encouraging, and facilitating the development of each student. The Academic Advisor and Success Instructor will teach multiple sections of various first-year seminars as well as academic recovery courses for at-risk students. This appointment covers a span of ten months (August 1 - May 31).

Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Meets individually with assigned and walk-in students regularly throughout the academic year to discuss transitional issues; instructs students on relative information pertaining to UMaine colleges, programs, and resources; assists with registration; and familiarizes students with academic policies and procedures.
 Teaches sections of first-year seminars and academic success courses designed specifically for students at risk.
 Participates in ongoing development of advising curriculum and materials.
 Serves as a resource for faculty and staff in matters related to student advising.
 Provides accurate information on the academic requirements of the University and of each college and major and assists students with transfer to the UMaine college and major of their choice through teaching and advising.
 Makes referrals of students to other campus services and resources as needed.
 Maintains an electronic written log of all student contacts in student's academic file through the Navigate system (or other system as requested). ?
Ensures confidentiality of student information and personal discussions.
Prepares for and participates in recruitment and retention efforts, including contacting unregistered CLAS students.
Engages regularly in professional development relevant to the position.
Develops and maintains professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect.
Builds productive relationships with internal and external constituencies.
Utilizes coaching and mentoring methods which provide an environment that is anticipatory, supportive, and encourages constructive feedback on performance.
Commits to organizational improvement by identifying opportunities to improve, and recommending possible alternatives for a situation.
Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned by the Advising and Student Services Center Director.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a fast-paced, professional office setting with frequent interruptions requiring flexibility and good humor. The utmost tact, confidentially, and professionalism are required to carry out the duties of the position in a gracious, welcoming, and successful student-centered manner. WORK YEAR: Full-time, ten-months. The appointment is effective August 1 to May 31 each year. The schedule for vacation time is established by the Center Director in consultation with the Academic Advisor and Success Instructor to afford optimal support for students during semester breaks.
WORK SCHEDULE: Expected to work in office during normal University of Maine business hours of Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Generally, work is expected to be accomplished during traditional work hours at the office provided by the Advising and Student Services Center. Occasionally duties will require meetings outside the traditional workday, or completion of work after hours. In consultation with supervisor, the employee will establish regular office hours and adjust the schedule as necessary. POSITION TYPE: Ten-month, ongoing, base-budgeted position
SCHEDULE FOR EVALUATION: In the initial six months of employment then annually thereafter in accordance with UMPSA Agreement.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree.
Classroom teaching experience.
 Demonstrated strong interest in working with college students.
Excellent verbal, written, and computer skills.
Well-developed interpersonal skills and demonstrated success in building positive relationships with students, faculty and staff are essential.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Education, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Social Work, Guidance, or a related field.
Working knowledge of college or university academic information and learning management software.
 Demonstrated experience working in academic advising or student support services at the college or university level.
