The Academic Advisor at the Milgard School of Business serves as a member of a professional team providing comprehensive advising services for undergraduate and graduate students, clarifying their academic interests, preparing for admission to a major and/or selection of their option or focus, and preparing for program completion. As part of the Milgard staff team, regular collaborative interactions with other staff and the leadership team, including the dean, are required. This position requires an individual with excellent communication and organizational skills, one who is adept at communicating with students and colleagues (both staff and faculty), well-rounded leadership abilities, and the capacity to work well as part of a team. This position also requires acquisition of knowledge of existing and emerging policies and procedures. This position will play a key role in developing and implementing assessment measures to inform policies and procedures that ensure effective support and advising for students. The Academic Advisor will use prior professional advising experience to empower students to identify interests and match personal strengths with educational and career opportunities. Important aspects of the work include learning-centered advising, attention to detail, frequent contact with the University’s administrative system, and active engagement with faculty and staff. This candidate will also participate in the admission review process, lead and/or participate in the planning of student events including orientations and new student welcome sessions. Being part of the student support team, this position will support Milgard’s recruitment efforts and participate on campus and school committees and workgroups. Occasional night and weekend hours may be required. Advising/Educational Planning Advise current undergraduate business students using various modalities (online, group, remote, via Canvas, in-person) regarding major options, quarterly registration, degree and graduation requirements, and opportunities that enhance their education (e.g., internship, study abroad, clubs and organizations, Milgard minors and other co-curricular experiences)
Advise MBA students in the progression to completion of the degree using various modalities (online, group, remote, via Canvas, in-person). Consult with the UW Graduate School when necessary.
Advise UW Tacoma pre-major students on admission requirements and general information about the Milgard School of Business and serve on the application review team
Refer and support students in connecting with resources to support their personal and educational needs; following up with students experiencing academic difficulty.
Support for Milgard and University Initiatives Lead the coordination of student events including New Student Orientations and back to school welcomes as well as related initiatives to support undergraduate and MBA students.
Establish and maintain working relationships with pre-major advisors and Milgard team members and campus and University colleagues (e.g. Undergraduate Academic Advising, Student and Enrollment Services, Equity and Diversity, International Student Services, Global Honors, Study Abroad, UW Graduate School, etc.) to offer joint programs which help students integrate their academic, career and personal goals
Serve as ad-hoc member of the Milgard Undergraduate Program Committee (UPC) and the Milgard Graduate Program Committee (GPC) and work closely with the undergraduate team and MBA director to provide recommendations to UPC/GPC regarding course offerings especially those that may create registration and graduation timing issues for students
Assist in planning and implementation of all-Milgard events and serve on Milgard and University committees

Bachelor’s Degree in business, education, social sciences or a related field. At least 2 years’ experience in academic advising, student services, or student counseling in a higher education setting. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentation skills. Ability to understand, apply, and communicate school and University policies. Master’s degree in Student Development Administration, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Business or a related field.
