Position Description

The University of Virginia seeks applications for an Academic Support Program Coordinator to work as part of the team at the Dathel and John Georges Student Center. In the fall of 2020, the Center began to offer supplemental instruction in several courses. We now seek to further develop this and similar peer-led academic support programs with the broader goal of fostering a sense of community and collaborative learning. These programs will primarily support students enrolled in STEM courses.


The coordinator’s duties will include day-to-day operations of these peer-led academic support programs, development and delivery of academic support workshops; some special event planning; support for other functions of the Georges Student Center; and other duties as assigned. Specific duties associated with operations of peer-led academic support programs will include: recruiting and supervising student workers serving in academic support roles; designing and delivering training for these student workers; recruiting and coordinating with faculty whose courses will be supported by the program; assisting the Director with program assessment; monitoring participation data; and assisting with financial record-keeping. The coordinator will also collaborate with and provide assistance to other academic support programs at the University as needed. The Center is located in Clemons Library, and as part of the Georges Student Center team, the coordinator will occasionally provide support at the Center’s front desk or assist with events. The coordinator will report to the Director of the Georges Student Center. The Center is a unit of the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost.

Additional Information

This position is a 3-year contract, renewable contingent upon availability of funding. Review of applications will begin April 1, 2021. The projected start date for this position is late July 2021. The initial work location (whether virtual or on Grounds) will be guided by the University’s current operating status with regard to COVID-19. When we return to regular operations, this position will primarily work on Grounds, with some flexibility for working virtually when classes are not in session. Required Qualifications

As this is a new program and a new position, we seek a candidate who is enthusiastic about helping to shape the program’s culture and practices and who can adapt as the program matures. A commitment to creating environments and programs which support the inclusion and achievement of students from of all backgrounds and identities is vital. The person in this position must have excellent communication skills, including speaking and writing, in order to be effective in building relationships with faculty, academic departments, and partners around the University, and in recruiting student workers. As the program will primarily support students enrolled in STEM courses, preference will be given to candidates who have a degree or work experience in quantitative or scientific fields. Qualified candidates will have an advanced degree with at least four years of relevant experience and will have an aptitude for learning software typical to office environments (ex: Office products, Zoom, scheduling systems). Preference will be given to candidates with college-level teaching experience and knowledge of assessment practices and/or data analysis. This position will require occasional evening and weekend hours, in order to observe sessions or hold meetings with student staff.
