Position Description
Academic and Student Success Advisors work in Exploratory Advising and work specifically with students who have not yet declared a major. Academic and Student Success Advisors play a significant role in our renewed focus on increasing student persistence, retention, and graduation. They work with students in their first year (or two) and focus on assisting students in successfully transitioning to college, choosing a major, and becoming academically qualified to declare their major. We currently have an opening for an Academic and Student Success Advisor positions on our Hammond campus.

Duties
Academic Advising
• Serve as the primary resource and advisor for all academic and student success related needs for students who are exploratory (i.e., have not declared a major).
• Develop supportive, mentoring relationships with each individual advisee. Maintain knowledge of each individual advisee’s goals, educational plans, challenges, and needed resources.
• Maintain degree plans for each individual advisee, monitor academic progress, and ensure that course selections lead students to graduation in the most efficient manner.
• Engage students in exploring and committing to their academic major in a timely manner.
• Maintain current, accurate knowledge of curricular requirements, registration procedures, University policies. Student Success and Retention
• Monitor the success and progress of all assigned advisees, intervene when necessary, determine root causes of student challenges, facilitate referrals to support services, and follow up to facilitate success, as appropriate.
• Identify students who are at risk of not persisting. Work with each student to develop a success plan that will prompt them to seek necessary resources and to take an active approach to succeeding in school.
• Facilitate the advisor led portion of the first year seminar course for exploratory students. Collaborate with faculty to provide a support network for students.

Academic Success, which is housed within Academic Affairs, is a newly redesigned area focused on increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation. The area includes Exploratory Advising which serves students who are undecided in their major and students who are not yet academically qualified to declare their desired major and Student Academic Support which provides centralized tutoring and supplemental instruction. Academic Success also collaborates extensively with our colleges to improve the student academic experience and increase student success across our institution.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
This position requires a Master's Degree and three years professional work experience within a higher education setting in a student affairs, academic advising and/or student success/retention-related position.

Preferred Qualifications
Professional work experience within a public higher education setting in an academic advising and/or retention-related position preferred. Candidates who have held at least one previous full-time position post-graduate school are strongly preferred.
