Position Description

The academic advisor will provide professional academic advising, retention and student engagement efforts for the University of Nebraska at Omaha School of Criminology and Criminal Justice (SCCJ) on the Omaha campus. Advising responsibilities include new, current and transfer students who need direction and expertise regarding SCCJ degree requirements, policies and procedures, and support in achieving their educational goals. Tasks include (but is not limited to) monitoring student records to ensure compliance with program requirements, progress toward the degree, and graduation requirements. Student engagement efforts include attending various events in the Lincoln and Omaha area at the direction of the Undergraduate Program Coordinator. This may include travel on and off campus to events. The advisor will be a positive contributor to the UNO SCCJ working collaboratively and collegially with the program staff and faculty on both the Omaha and Lincoln campuses as part of SCCJ tasks, student events, and initiatives. The advisor will support a positive learning environment for our students, and positive workplace for our team. Academic Advising and Retention: Manage assigned caseload of active students and provide personalized guidance from admission through graduation; create and evaluate educational plans of study; recommend courses and schedules to students; complete student related forms; evaluate transcripts, and support career/internship preparation. Maintain documentation in institutional record-keeping systems and develop a basic understanding of university advising technologies. Student Engagement Activities: Assist with student related academic activities (e.g., meet with prospective students and families, assist with on/off campus events, promptly answer questions via phone, email, or in person, promote value of SCCJ program). Interact with students at the high school and college level. Drive to various locations around the Omaha and Lincoln metro areas as needed. Assist other SCCJ team members with planning, organizing and attending SCCJ student events as needed, maintain related student files and administrative reporting requirements. Engage with, and support, UNO SCCJ student groups as needed. Respond to requests from the undergraduate program coordinator to provide information needed for reporting and other purposes. New Student Onboarding: Orient newly admitted students to the SCCJ, program requirements, and key institutional processes, engage in continuous improvement of onboarding program and practices.
