Position Description

Concordia University Chicago (CUC), a liberal arts-based Christian university founded in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod tradition, is seeking a competent, compassionate, and creative individual who can supervise the Office of Academic Advising & Study Abroad. The Director must have a positive mindset that is focused on team building and professional development that will support student success and steady progress toward graduation. The Director must be able to prioritize and manage multiple projects from a variety of University stakeholders while maintaining a caseload of advisees. Cultivating collaborative relationships with faculty and staff is critical to the success of the department and serving students well. A willingness to assess and provide feedback and strategies based on improving practices, policies, and procedures that impact student advising and clearing a path toward graduation is central to the work that is done by the director. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Student Success and is located in River Forest, IL.


  • Uphold the Mission and the core values of Concordia University Chicago in all interactions with student, faculty, and staff populations
  • Train/Supervise Undergraduate advising team, which assists undergraduate students from enrollment to program completion with the core value of excellence
  • Promote and maintain an office that provides a welcoming, student-oriented environment rooted in the core value of service to assist students, faculty and staff
  • Educate and enforce compliance with University policies and certification standards with the core value of integrity
  • Keep department chairs and deans aware of enrollment needs of incoming Freshmen/Transfer and continuing students to support the core value of the individual
  • Coordinate/collaborate/facilitate programs interdepartmentally and ensure advising representation at admitted and prospective student visit days
  • Provide data to Associate Dean for Student Success, Registrar and academic departments regarding course offerings/additional sections needed/cancellations and impact on students
  • Compare, manage, and communicate with appropriate University stakeholders to maintain degree roadmaps with requirements listed in catalogs and degree works
  • Serve on various committees which may include, but not be limited to suspension, college policy, and other groups as relevant to program and/or assigned by administration
  • Serve as the contact for parents and current students seeking confirmation of advisor feedback or concerns/complaints on academic issues
  • Oversee and maintain current publications/web information regarding advising
  • Coordinate assignment of faculty advisors with department chairs; Responsible for overseeing maintenance and distribution of advising materials and new faculty advisor training
  • Serve as interdepartmental communication liaison to administrators, directors of student services offices, athletics and outside agencies
  • Serve as advisory council member for Concordia Honors Program and advisor to honors program students
  • Promote the Concordia University System visiting student program, study abroad and Washington Semester
  • Partner with ExCel Coordinator with regard to advising, registration of conditionally admitted students
  • Develop, facilitate, and assess content development for all advising programming Identify and provide professional development opportunities and intercollegiate presentations
  • Develop/manage office budget - In addition to director responsibilities, maintain a student advising load of approximately 200 Undergraduate students (see job description for Academic Advisor)

Required Qualifications

  • 3 years of experience working with college students in an advisory capacity
  • 2 years of management experience
  • Master's Degree Required
  • Higher Education Leadership preferred

  • Oriented toward big picture with an affinity for research, critical and strategic thinking, & problem-solving
  • Commitment to teamwork and positive contributor to collaborative efforts
  • Professionalism (in appearance, attitude, and work ethic), integrity, and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population are required attributes
  • Ability to work with individuals through complex situations and maintain emotional management
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality of student records and office data
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as a sense of humor
  • Technically proficient with databases and spreadsheets, word processing including mail merge and email programs; specifically Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, & Publisher, Maxient, Ellucian/BANNER, & Degree Works.
