Position Description

The Director of Undergraduate Research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln leads high impact practices designed to engage students in the research mission of the university. Such work includes oversight of Undergraduate Research and Creative Experiences (UCARE), First Year Research Experiences (FYRE) and Summer Research Opportunities (SROP) which serve over 500 students each year. We are seeking an energetic and experienced leader who is excited to lead UNL’s undergraduate research programs that support university priorities, aligned with the N2025 vision to increase degree completion, close equity gaps, and build an ecology of validation for UNL’s at-promise scholars. UNL undergraduate research initiatives exist on a solid foundation, with UCARE providing funded research opportunities to approximately 400 students annually for over 20 years. Duties

The Director of Undergraduate Research collaborates extensively with campus teams (including the Offices of Undergraduate Education, Graduate Studies, and Research and Economic Development) to conceptualize, implement, and deliver robust programming and seminars for undergraduates engaged in UCARE, FYRE and SROP programs and coordinate annual research fairs and other campus-wide undergraduate research events. The Director works with college and department leaders of Undergraduate Education and Graduate Education to develop strategic plans, tools, and structures for assessing the impact of undergraduate research at UNL and serves as UNL’s institutional representative for national organizations (CUR, BTAA, SACNAS, ABRCMS, CDF etc.) which are focused on undergraduate research. The Director is also responsible for coordinating appropriate web design and marketing personnel to develop promotional print and social media materials related to undergraduate research.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree plus 3 years of higher education experience supporting student success. Demonstrated experience in successfully supporting first generation, low-income, and/or underrepresented ethnic minority college students. Demonstrated experience with higher education program development, implementation, & assessment necessary. Demonstrated experience in supporting undergraduate research programs. Excellent oral and written communication skills essential. Ability to work effectively and communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds required. Must be able to work independently and collaboratively in a team-focused environment. Ability to utilize diplomacy to build relationships necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

5 years progressive experience supporting student success and retention. Assessing academic or student service programs desirable. Experience supervising student workers and professional staff, helpful. Experience organizing co-curricular student events (workshops, trainings), desirable. Experience with implementation and assessment of undergraduate research programs (application processes, training, funding, etc.).
