Position Description

The Academic Advising practicum opportunity at the University of Massachusetts — Boston will provide the graduate student with hands-on experience in one-on-one academic advising, aimed to serve College of Management students with more than 60 credits. The goal will be to challenge and support the intern to engage in a developmental, proactive problem solving approach to advisement to ensure students succeed academically and are fully engaged in their educational experience. This position will be part of the College of Management advising team and will be housed within the Undergraduate Program Office.

Academic Advising interns will:
• Employ knowledge of student development theory to guide interactions with a diverse student population.
• Apply critical thinking, problem solving and creativity to evaluate and enhance student advising programs and services.
• Become familiar with general academic requirements and utilize knowledge in one-on-one advising settings.
• Develop valuable skills in academic advising through regular work with individual students; and in program development through participation in the coordination and/or delivery of various workshop topics that support the programmatic goals of the College.
• Gain an understanding of the mission, values, goals and culture of the institution.

Duties

• Shadow academic advising staff to gain an understanding of the advising process and approach when working college students at University of Massachusetts — Boston.
• Meet one-on-one with college students to assist them in identifying personal, academic, and career goals to guide the development of an individual academic plan.
• Develop and facilitate workshops related to student success.
• Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities when available.
• Utilize pre-term and post-term data to proactively identify students at risk of poor academic performance.
• Refer students to appropriate student support services.
• Other duties as determined by supervisor.

Additional Information

Yearly Employment Period: Academic year commitment, September – May, with possibility of additional summer hours if desired by intern. Exact start and end dates, to be agreed upon by the staff member that is supervising Graduate Intern in the College of Management Undergraduate Program Office in conjunction with graduate program requirements.
Weekly Work Expectation in Hours: At least 10 hours a week to be mutually agreed upon by staff member that is supervising Graduate Intern in the College of Management Undergraduate Program Office.

Weekly Work Format: In person, remote or hybrid work format possible and to be mutually agreed upon by staff member supervising Graduate Intern in the College of Management Undergraduate Program Office.

• Preferred minimum of 1 year of full-time (or equivalent) experience working with college students at the undergraduate level.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively as a team member, as well as independently.
