The purpose of this position is to actively guide students through their pathway model by providing a strong advising process embedded, ongoing and supported by technology. The MAP Advisor (My Academic Plan) will manage a caseload within a pathway from on-boarding through program completion, provide advising checkpoints at the 15, 30 and 45 credit benchmarks, track interactions with students, implement a proactive advising approach for students that have fallen in persistence probability, and meet the Objectives set forth by the Project SENDA (Students Engaged in Direct Advising) grant. The MAP Advisor will collaborate with the College’s Director of Advising Initiatives, Outreach and Recruitment Department, QEP Committee, Department Chair and coordinate with faculty advisors to help students make informed choices about their degree, transfer and career opportunities.
Meet with students to explain and evaluate admissions assessment test scores; identify the appropriate educational and career options; assist with the analysis of each option including possible outcomes and implications; establish academic and career goals; advise students of appropriate placement and coursework; establish an action plan for students to explore alternative careers and related programs; assist in registering for courses; identify options for students to satisfy degree requirements; evaluate and make recommendations and/or amendments to student’s program of study; inform students of procedures for repeating coursework, withdrawal and graduation; teach the necessary skills to self-navigate to degree completion including transfer requirements; provide transfer planning to universities including concurrent enrollment. Utilize case management principles of advocacy, assessment and service facilitation to advance the achievement of goals and link students with appropriate resources; provide information and referrals to services such as financial aid, tutoring, testing, career entry, counseling disability services, etc.; assist students in the acquisition, usage and evaluation of information including college guideline, catalogs and on-line resources; provide information regarding student life opportunities to include student activities, recreational sports and the benefits of leadership skills, team building and civic engagement; provide information regarding the promotion of special programs and opportunities such as bridge course and honors programs. Utilize available and appropriate technology to monitor academic progress of students toward degree completion; monitor caseloads to ensure that students are making adequate progress; utilize technology tools to contact students regarding milestones; document ongoing case management activities and pertinent student information and status updates; compile data of advising activities by maintaining service records; maintain telephone inquiries; and provide monthly reports. Participate in departmental assignment, committee work, and student support systems by coordinating special events and projects; participate in organizations and committees emphasizing student success, scholarships, and empowerment; and interact with other employees and the community; assist with recruitment activities; establish and maintain interdepartmental relationships with all student services; attend annual professional development training as required. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
