Position Description

This position is for a full-time, twelve-month PathwayOregon Advisor to provide comprehensive information, advising, support, and referrals to participating students. The individual in this position contributes to the program's objectives by providing guidance that leads students to make informed and reasonable decisions in setting goals, selecting courses, studying effectively, managing finances, selecting majors, exploring careers, preparing for graduate school, and engaging in campus life.

Department Summary: The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) promotes academic excellence, universal access, engagement and achievement for the student scholar. UESS programs focus on the educational trajectory of the student by providing opportunities and services essential for progress toward scholastic objectives and intellectual development. UESS departments and programs serve the entire population of UO undergraduate students and partner closely with other campus units to support student success and engagement.

PathwayOregon is the University of Oregon’s promise of full tuition and fees and comprehensive support for lower-income Oregonians. The program serves over 2,600 undergraduates reflecting a diversity of backgrounds, including first-generation, low-income, rural and underrepresented students. PathwayOregon aims to help students meet their individual graduation goals while increasing lower-income student retention and graduation rates overall. Participating students receive financial funding and are connected to a dedicated team of advisors who provide holistic wraparound support.

Duties

PathwayOregon advisors work to create meaningful partnerships with students, empowering them to identify and actively pursue their goals, while also helping to navigate and alleviate barriers by clarifying policies and hidden curriculum, facilitating greater access to campus and community resources, and fostering a space of belonging. Additionally, PathwayOregon advisors develop, plan, and coordinate proactive outreach and programming to support the needs of participating students. The individual in this position will assist in the coordination of PathwayOregon's peer mentor program. Advisors must exhibit professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, and the ability to create a welcoming, inclusive, accessible and professional atmosphere in the office. This person must exhibit cultural humility and agility, with the ability and commitment to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. The position reports to the PathwayOregon Director.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Two years of experience in advising, counseling, teaching or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications

Professional Competencies*:
• A broad working knowledge of student development principles.
• Demonstrated understanding of issues facing diverse groups (e.g. low-socioeconomic, first generation, underrepresented students of color, non-traditional, and under-prepared individuals).
• Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated high-level organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, and time-sensitive environment.
• Diligently attends to details and pursues quality in accomplishing tasks.
• Recognizes situations that warrant initiative and moves forward without hesitation; resolving issues, problems, or situations.
• Ability to anticipate next steps and execute independently.
• Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite (or similar). Ability to produce professional correspondence, documents, data reports, and presentations.
• Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies.
• Knowledge of university policies, procedures, systems and structures.

Preferred Qualifications*:
• Master’s degree or equivalent combination of skills, experience, and education.
• Three years of experience providing academic advising, personal counseling, or teaching record in higher education setting.
• Experience working on issues of diversity, equity and inclusion to effect meaningful change and promote student success.
• Spanish language fluency.
