Position Description

A person in this position will serve as an advisor for students at the University of Georgia applying to dental and optometry schools. The position involves working with students on the process for gaining admission into both dental and optometry school, coordinating with other UGA units that advise and support students applying to dental and optometry school, and coordinating programs and events to support students with an interest in applying to dental and optometry school.


Meets with and advises current students, alumni, and previous applicants on an individual basis. Also meets with other UGA advisors, faculty, and recruiters. Assists students by answering questions on options, procedures, timetables, requirements, and deadlines for dental and optometry school applications.

Assists Coordinator with designing and running programs and events such as workshops and mock interviews to support students with an interest in applying to dental and optometry schools.

Maintains hours for walk-in students to address general questions. Meets with prospective students. 5% Allocates time for responding to student questions submitted electronically (e.g., email) and disseminating information through the official Pre-Health Advising office list-serv.

Assists Coordinator with supporting the various dental and optometry student organizations.

Professional Development – Attend any classes related to academic advising or related topics. This can include, but is not limited to, completing the Certificate in Academic Advising, attendance at national and regional meetings of the National Association for Advising the Health Professions (NAAHP), or attendance at fairs/conferences at other institutions in the region.

Required Qualifications

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree; familiarity with FERPA and University of Georgia academic policies and procedures; ability to adapt quickly to changing policies and procedures; ability to handle sensitive information in a discreet and professional manner; demonstrated interpersonal skills while working under pressure and with individuals of varying cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Three years experience working with students within a higher education context; experience collaborating with external constituents; experience researching, interpreting, and applying policies and procedures; experience compiling data and preparing reports; experience prioritizing and managing several projects simultaneously and successfully; experience using on-line database systems; knowledge of course offerings and requirements of a specific area of academic study, especially those related to admissions requirements for these schools.
