Pre-law Advising resides in the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences Academic Advising Office. The pre-law advisor works closely with faculty and staff in a busy, collaborative environment. The pre-law advisor provides educational services and support to all Binghamton University students and recent graduates who are interested in attending law school or pursuing legal careers.
Responsibilities of the pre-law advisor are as follows:
Provide information on the curricular and co-curricular opportunities required to develop the skills and experiences required for success in law school
Share information on law schools, including rankings and other statistics, and evaluating advisees' chances of obtaining admission to particular programs
Assist advisees with the law school application process, including personal statements, letters of recommendation, LSATs, etc.
Provide support and offering relevant resources for underrepresented students
Advise on the financial aspects of law school, including costs and income expectations
Provide general academic advising to pre-law students, if appropriate
Connect with pre-law student groups and faculty
Coordinating communication with the Harpur Law Council and other alumni in the legal field
Maintain and promote a network of faculty, attorneys and law students as advising resources
Connect with pre-law advisors and law school admissions representatives
Participate in the Northeast Association of Pre-Law Advisors (NAPLA)
Coordinate pre-law activities on campus, including speakers, outreach, training sessions, etc. to assist students as they make their decision whether to pursue law school
Co-coordinate and actively participate in the annual "Current Issues in Legal Practice" winter course Participate new student orientation and admissions events
Coordinate the annual campus Law Day with the Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development Collect law school admission data and preparing an annual pre-law report
Write dean's letters and process bar statements
Review and award pre-law scholarships
Coordinate pre-law internship site program
