Position Description

Union Institute & University, a national university offering undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degree programs for adult students is searching for a Program Advisor based at our system headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. This is a full time (35 hours/week position). The office hours for this position are: 12:00pm - 8:00pm Monday - Thursday and 10:00am - 6:00pm on Friday’s.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position is responsible for (but not limited to) providing assistance to students in their development and ongoing achievement of education goals, providing students with academic planning services based on the school program requirements and support services, and promoting student success and retention through effective communication, service, and support.


Advising: Provides information, guidance and process to an assigned group of 75-100 undergraduate students regarding degree plans, registration/enrollment, graduation requirements, and financial aid. Orients the student to degree audits, scheduling, financial aid, Campus Web, prior learning assessment opportunities, graduation requirements, satisfactory academic progress requirements and other pertinent items to ensure the student’s smooth entry transition or successful continued progress. Acts as liaison for the student with the centralized offices of Financial Aid, Business Office, Registrar, and Information Technology, and serves as a student advocate for problem resolution. Monitors student progress and intervenes as appropriate to ensure student success. Monitors student’s financial standing and intervenes to avoid financial issues that may interfere with the student’s progress. Identifies opportunities to develop, implement, measure, and improve academic success strategies. Maintains compliance and strict adherence to all University policies and standards. Retention: Contributes to retention efforts by tracking student progress, maintaining contact with stop-out students, resolving issues that will interfere with student progress, ensuring that the student is satisfied with the academic experience. Provides outstanding customer service that exceeds the student’s expectations by responding to student concerns, anticipating and resolving situations before they become issues. Escalates complicated or sensitive issues to the dean’s attention to ensure prompt and successful resolution. Other: Miscellaneous duties, including, but not limited to: Processes paperwork such as registrations, drops/adds, instructor changes; ensures initial paperwork such as transcripts, prior learning documents, are received and processed. Prepares student’s file for submission to Registrar for graduation. Assists admissions with recruitment activities by adding pre-enrollment advising applicants, preparing draft personalized curriculum plans, and confirming financial aid awards for applicants. Others duties may include collecting and depositing tuition payments; registering transient students; serving on committees, task forces, and initiatives; professional development.

Required Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree required. Self-starter with the ability to self-manage and work interdependently with team members. Must have a strong commitment to education and have the demonstrated counseling or coaching skills required to effectively keep online students on track. Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Ability to adapt to new and rapidly changing situations. Demonstrated integrity and commitment to the highest ethical standards when interacting with students, faculty, and staff. Critical problem solving skills, enthusiasm, and commitment. Ability to perform multiple tasks while attending to details.

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED: Master’s degree preferred. Experience working with/in the Criminal Justice field and/or Criminal Justice Students preferred Experience working with Veterans preferred
