Position Description

Academic advising is a collaborative relationship between a student and an academic advisor. The intent of this collaboration is to assist the student in developing meaningful educational goals that are consistent with values, abilities, and personal/professional interests. Although many individuals on campus, including academic advisors, may assist the student in making decisions and accomplishing goals, the academic advisor is granted formal authority by the College of Interdisciplinary and Continuing Studies to approve the student’s academic program of study and assist the student in progressing toward their degree. Effective academic advising assists the student to utilize the network of academic and career support services available on campus and empowers the student to realize the full undergraduate experience at Morgan State University. This position provides academic advising, program and curriculum support to the Graduate Program in the College of Interdisciplinary and Continuing Studies. This position assists students in evaluating academic abilities, establishing and accomplishing academic goals and objectives.


Advise potential and current graduate students on academic requirements and procedures in the College of Interdisciplinary and Continuing Studies.
Provide accurate and consistent information; clarify program requirements, policies and procedures.
Evaluate and make recommendations on academic review petitions and amendments to students’ programs of study.
Monitor academic progress, complete graduation audits, maintain student files and records; evaluate transfer transcripts.
Assist the student in identifying appropriate institutional resources; facilitate relationships between the student and other individuals/offices on campus who may provide assistance.
Prepare advising materials; develop and facilitate presentations using various technology options; coordinate large and small informational sessions.

Required Qualifications

A bachelors degree, in any discipline, from a regionally accredited college or university.
Two to three years of experience in higher education advising or counseling is preferable with non-traditional students.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with a master’s degree will receive preference.
