This position serves as the Senior Staff Advisor in the Department of Biological Sciences, part of the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences. The Biological Sciences team advise our 1600 students who have declared a major in one of six degree programs: Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Computational Biology, Ecology and Evolution, Microbiology, or Molecular Biology. Our advisees are from a variety of backgrounds including underrepresented minority, first generation, and international students, and are interested in admission to medical school and/or careers in the health sciences or industry, as well as a variety of research based graduate programs. The Senior Staff Advisor will join a team of six (four Staff Advisors and two Faculty Advisors (2/3 time advising)) where time will be 3/4 spent advising students and professional development/training and 1/4 time coordinating office administration, including staff advisor supervision. This position requires excellent organizational and communication skills, timeliness, and desire to maintain a cooperative and collaborative team environment. Additionally, patience, flexibility, energy, and a sincere desire to assist students with appropriate course selection, degree planning, and the development of academic and career goals are essential. Successful candidates must demonstrate the ability to prioritize and manage multiple simultaneous demands, inclusive of balancing a sizeable caseload of students with administrative, creative, and/or project-driven responsibilities. A Master’s degree is strongly preferred with one degree in biology or a related STEM field. Alternatively, a combination of six years of relevant experience and a bachelor’s degree in biology or a related STEM field.
Preferred qualifications are a Master’s degree in a relevant field, 5 years experience working in an academic environment, preferably in a student services capacity, and supervisory experience (more if only a Bachelor’s), and a background in biology. Or the equivalent of a Bachelor's degree and 9 years of relevant experience.
