Position Description

In this position, the Intern will assist with daily operations at the Shanahan Academic Center and provide support to programs related to academic services, student-athlete development, and standing office projects. This internship provides a combination of athletics academic advising and learning specialist experiences while developing a more experienced and well-rounded student-athlete support professional at the D1 level. SASS Interns will be well-versed in the experiences and knowledge of academic advising, learning support strategies, disability services, NCAA progress towards degree rules/eligibility, while developing the necessary administrative skills to grow within the industry.

Duties

Maintain a schedule of weekly Husky 360 meetings with an assigned caseload (25-30) of first-year student-athletes from various teams
Monitor and report academic progress of student-athlete caseload while fostering academic accountability Develop the ability to identify student-athletes of concern through formal and informal assessment
Collaborate with Academic Support Specialists to develop and implement individualized academic support plans
Assist student-athlete caseload in the development of short-term and long-term achievable goals
Prepare daily and/or weekly academic updates to track the progress of assigned student-athlete caseload while sharing with Academic Support Specialists and coaches
Develop a strong understanding of NCAA continuing eligibility and progress towards degree rules and regulations
Understand and adhere to rules and regulations of FERPA
Develop a working knowledge of university degree requirements and DARS to assist student-athlete caseload in selecting classes for enrollment
Perform administrative tasks, specifically tutoring payroll, and collaborate on various projects as requested by SASS staff
Develop strong understanding of all things related to academic misconduct applicable to student-athletes Assist in oversight of evening hours, 2 nights per week, in the Shanahan Academic Center
Estimated Time Allotted to Job Duties:
Individual Student Meetings (maintain proper documentation, track academic progress, and liaise with major advisors): 50%
Administrative Tasks and other duties assigned: 20%
Tutoring Payroll: 15%
Evening Study Hall Monitor: 15%

Additional Information

Compensation for this position will be at a rate of $20/hour for 30 hours per week during the 10-month commitment - Preferred start August 1 through May 31. This position is not benefits eligible.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

BA/BS required; MA/MS/MEd preferred in Education, Higher Education, Psychology, Sport Management, or a related field
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
Personable and organized
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Computer skills - proficiency in Microsoft Word & Excel required
Knowledge of academic guidance counseling - active listening skills, complex problem solving, deductive and inductive reasoning, and ability to motivate student-athletes to academically achieve
Desire to obtain full-time professional employment in the student-athlete support industry
Must be able to past background check

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in collegiate athletics, academic support, higher education, teaching or related fieldwork Knowledge of Banner, DARS, Salesforce, Navigate Familiarity with NCAA rules and regulations
Understanding of Northeastern University and its programs
