Position Description

The Student Services Advanced Specialist (SSAS) serves as a resource for students as they navigate their journey with Pima Community College. The SSAS are responsible for providing excellent customer service by responding to student inquiries via walk-in, telephone, and email while researching and resolving student concerns as they are often the first point of contact. Student inquiries include but are not limited to admissions, advising, assessment and testing, career services, financial aid, graduation services, new student orientation, registration, student self-service stations, veteran’s services, and the welcome desk. They must be able to be creative problem solvers and be comfortable with making independent determinations and recommendations to students in accordance with guidelines prescribed by Student Affairs. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about making access to education a reality for the diverse student populations of Tucson. Due to COVID-19, this role will temporarily be performed remotely. The successful candidate will train and work from home for the remainder of this calendar year or until, at which time the role may transition on-site or have a hybrid schedule. Candidate must be willing and able to relocate to Tucson, AZ (no relocation reimbursement is available) prior to the on-site job requirements.


Advise students on policies, procedures, and processes pertaining to multiple functional areas, as well as targeted academic programs or student populations, which include but are not limited to: academic advising, admissions/selective admissions, assessment/testing; career services, financial aid I/II; graduation services; international student services, new student orientation; registration; retention of developmental education students, self-service stations and veterans services
Train and assist students to navigate the student portal and online student services processes Implement department operational procedures and processes in coordination with the District Office and other campus departments
Make decisions and/or recommendations according to complex guidelines for financial aid and advising; evaluating academic transcripts and completing official degree and graduation checks. and prioritizing student service requests
Provide services to students and the general public by resolving student services complaints and concerns, and responding to a variety of general inquiries and requests
May serve as a lead to staff to include assigning and monitoring work and providing guidance to student services specialist(s), technicians, and others or serving as the resource specialist over multiple areas
Make recommendations for process changes and improvements; preparing reports and conducting data collection
Organize transfer fairs, career fairs, projects or activities including training, facilitating workshops
Participate in setting area goaSSASls and objectives
Perform other duties of a similar nature or level

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field and Three years of practical/applied experience in Student Affairs. Including but not limited to, Academic Advising, Registration, College Admissions, Transfer, Virtual Advising, Financial Aid, Career Services, or detailed work experience in higher education to establish student affairs experience.
