Position Description

Reporting to Student Affairs and the Directors of:
Advising and Counseling; or Student Engagement;
or Virtual Services;
the Senior Academic Advisor (Program Advisor) advises students in an assigned academic pathway as part of a student caseload;
serves as a liaison between the division deans, faculty, and Student Affairs area staff;
works as part of an assigned advising and counseling team, and collaborates with faculty in supporting the development and updates of student academic pathways.
This position provides excellent advising services and support to students, working as a professional and collaborative team member, and develops and supports the execution of strategic initiatives in collaboration with leadership.
This position researches and communicates changes and innovations in student affairs and academic and career trajectories utilizing advising and student success best practices, identifies advising objectives, and develops process improvement plans.
The Senior Academic Advisor provides information to area leaders regarding both student affairs and student services issues;
academic and instructional program updates;
reviews policies and procedures;
drives consistency and efficiency in processes;
and builds integrated plans to help shape the College’s culture and position the College as a premier educational institution.
Senior Academic Advisors participate in projects and consult leadership in key student affairs functions including academic advising policy development;
planning and process design;
and strategic plan interpretation. Incumbents in these positions serve on a team to advise students on programs of study; research and recommend solutions for complex student advising concerns;
develop, maintain, and provide guidance on College policies, processes, and procedures; assist in designing metrics;
and recommend improvements and modifications.
This is temporarily a virtual position through May 2021 however employees must be able to relocate prior to the start date to Tucson, AZ.

Frequent local travel is required for all positions. Incumbents for all positions may be reassigned to other areas should additional program needs arise.


Senior Academic Advisors will spend their time doing the following:
Provides excellent advising services and support to students, working as a professional and collaborative team member
Contact students in their assigned program areas to inform, invite, and schedule them to utilize their advising services
Develop and offer group advising opportunities for students
Schedule office hours/appointments with students year round virtually and at the campuses students attend, when a return to campuses occurs
Work with Deans, Faculty, Advising teams. and Curriculum Services to support development of academic pathways led by Deans and Faculty Create and facilitate academic program information sessions and/or orientations
Help to develop and support the First Year Experience program with embedded advising, career advising for specialized programming
Connect and coordinate with faculty in their program area
Visit classrooms to talk about advising resources
Assist in the Student Services Centers as needed for advising support to students

Additional duties will include the following:
Advise students on programs of study; admissions and completion requirements for degree programs; and certificate and occupational programs
Assist students in completing Pima Community College (PCC) Educational Plans to meet their academic goals
Serve as a liaison between the Division Deans, faculty, and area staff for information and development of area initiatives
Research and recommend solutions for complex student advising concerns
Analyze student outcomes data to identify issues and discrepancies; formulate recommendations for appropriate action based on findings; partner with the Registrar’s office to provide information and resolve student concerns
Serve on the area teams to plan, facilitate, and assist in developing and implementing goals and objectives
Ensure workflows are effective in meeting goals and objectives
Ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations
Develop, maintain, and provide guidance on College policies, processes, and procedures within Student Affairs
Provide information regarding best practices and trends in student development theory
Collect and evaluate student and academic services operations and processes; assist in designing metrics to measure quality of services; recommend improvements and modifications; summarize findings and prepare related reports
Collaborate with other area advisors and area coordinators and the District Office to facilitate and improve services to students; create effective working relationships with academic departments and support units
Research, update, and maintain confidential student records; conduct student transactions utilizing the College student information system
May serve on college-wide committees and task forces focusing on academic success, student advising, and assigned instructional programs
Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and One year of progressive experience in Student Affairs providing academic advising services

Work effectively with leadership, governance, and faculty across a wide range of academic and business operations areas with multiple constituents and to serve as an advisor and consultant to these groups
Manage multiple projects and time while under pressure to meet deadlines
Follow project plans and the coordination of multiple resources and activities Interact and effectively communicate with a diverse employee, student population
Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Understanding of the College's structure, policies, and practices
Demonstrated experience using computer tech as databases, internet, tracking systems, and word processing
