Position Description

As an Academic Advisor you will support Earth Atmospheric and Planetary Science undergraduate students in evaluating and determining their interests and abilities as a link to selecting majors or programs.


You will guide students in developing a plan of study that meets degree requirements and fits their timetable for graduation. Additionally, you will maintain a consistent pattern of contact to encourage a trusting relationship through multiple channels of communication. You will also assess when a situation calls for professional intervention or academic referral as well as conduct audits on student progress toward their degree. You will complete documentation for proper maintenance of student records. You will teach the freshman seminar course to help students transition to Purdue. You will participate in departmental committees to help augment the vision of the department. Finally, you will participate in campus orientation activities and facilitate departmental recruiting activities designed to attract new students.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in counseling, higher education administration or student personnel or related field. Three years of academic advising or student services experience Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Knowledge of academic advising Must be able to collaborate and work with faculty, staff, students, and parents Basic skills in Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Ability to effectively plan and organize work to meet established timelines; problem-solving skills, teamwork, and relationship building skills; high attention to detail and ability to work with accuracy with data Data query and internet skills

Preferred Qualifications

Science-related work experience Knowledge of programs and majors at Purdue University Learning orientation to changing technology impacting business processes
