Position Description

This position is for a professional advisor who will serve in the Exploratory Center working with undeclared and mis-declared students who are making major changes. This advisor will be responsible for advising and maintaining regular contact with a roster of students during the major exploration process, guiding them through that process using appropriate resources and programs, responding to student communications and making referrals to other campus units. This person will also assist with program design with other stakeholders on campus, and develop materials. Because this individual will interact directly with Exploratory Center employees, advisees, and other stakeholders, in general, they must demonstrate an appreciation for and a commitment to accommodating diverse backgrounds and experiences in the course of their daily work. They must demonstrate a commitment to cultural competence and ongoing professional development in this area.

Duties

Advising Students - 65%
The primary responsibility of an Academic Advisor in the Exploratory Group within the Exploratory Center is to meet with assigned students, provide each student with accurate information about various degree programs, make recommendations about course selection for upcoming semesters, generate advising forms detailing these recommendations, and maintain notes about these meetings. An academic advisor will maintain consistent contact with assigned students, maintain accurate student records and respond in a timely manner to questions from their advisees. The advisor must demonstrate a perspective that genuinely appreciates, understands, supports and effectively accommodates diverse student backgrounds and experiences. An Advisor in the Exploratory Center will work directly with students to develop a major search plan and goals; perform academic advising consistent with the student’s current stage of development of a major focus; and, maintain correspondence, referrals and support of students throughout the process to major declaration or change. Full participation in Orientation advising throughout the year is expected.

Tools and Programming- 25%
An Advisor in the Exploratory Center will demonstrate mastery of tools and develop programming to assist students in their major search, emphasizing partnerships with other campus stakeholders. Membership on campus committees and participation in major-related campus events may be recommended. Other duties as assigned.

Staff Meetings and Training Sessions - 10%
Attend staff and committee meetings, classes and training sessions offered on campus. This can include, but is not limited to, the Certificate in Academic Advising, the Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion, and other campus training to maintain and enhance cultural competence.
