The Environmental First Year (ENVFY) Program at North Carolina State University (NC State) caters to undergraduate students with a strong interest in the environment and sustainability. Through the ENVFY program, students learn about diverse approaches to study environmental issues and are exposed to a wide variety of disciplines and careers. The program also cultivates NC State’s motto of ‘Think and Do’ by balancing critical thinking with hands-on learning. Undergraduate students enrolled in the program complete a two-semester sequence that is a stepping stone for various environmentally-focused degree programs throughout the university, particularly majors in the Colleges of Natural Resources (CNR), Sciences (COS), and Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). The ENVFY program relies on a collaborative approach by integrating support and expertise from both the ENVFY personnel and disciplinary advisors and faculty. The ENVFY program is administratively housed in the CNR Academic Affairs Office, which assists academic departments in delivering excellent educational programs to undergraduate, graduate, and pre-college students and serves as the primary communication link on academic matters between the College and the larger community. CNR and its ENVFY partner colleges place a strong emphasis on enriching student development by offering and promoting co-curricular experiences and other professional development opportunities beyond the classroom. CNR’s high-quality academic offerings and its emphasis on hands-on learning are why it is an academic world leader in the sustainable use of natural resources. The ENVFY Academic Advisor serves under the supervision of the Director of the ENVFY program and works collaboratively with a wide variety of administrative and academic units within CNR and other participating colleges, as well as across the university community and with external partners. The ENVFY Academic Advisor also works proactively to cultivate a diverse community founded on the principles of mutual respect and inclusiveness. The selected candidate will be expected to foster an environment that is supportive and welcoming of all groups.
Primary Purpose/ Essential Duties of the Position Advising:
Provide quality cross-curricular academic advising to undergraduate students in the Environmental First Year Program regarding major exploration, academic requirements, course selection and registration, personal enrichment, and other issues related to academic and student success using a proactive and developmental approach. Be proficient in the requirements of the curricula and career options for all environmentally related programs at NC State. Swiftly transition students into their desired majors by working closely with directors of undergraduate programs, academic advisors, and other departmental representatives.
Serve as an instructor for ENV 100: Success in the Environmental First Year and be part of the curriculum design team for the course. The course is for first-year undergraduate students and focuses on issues related to their transition to college.
Actively participate in the ENVFY Advising Collaborative Team. Serve as a Student Services team member by advising student groups and by assisting with efforts such as Open House, Career Fair, Wolfpack Welcome Week, and New Student Orientation. Participate in the planning, implementation, and support for curricular and co-curricular programs that support undergraduate students interested in environmentally-focused degree programs by working collaboratively with University partners, unit staff, students, and community members. Depending on experience, there is an opportunity to take on additional leadership in CNR as coordinator of advising or new student initiatives.
Participate in ongoing training and workshops to remain up-to-date regarding degree requirements and policies as well as best practices in advising, instruction, and student support.

Participate in the University community, particularly in ways strategic to the unit’s mission

An advanced degree in an environmental discipline, counseling, student development, or related fields OR a baccalaureate degree in one of these areas plus at least 3 years of relevant experience in higher education is required.

Demonstrated understanding of developmental needs of undergraduate students and comfort with a proactive and intrusive style of advising. Demonstrated competence with being inclusive of various perspectives, identities, backgrounds, developmental stages, and career interests of undergraduate students. Demonstrated ability to exercise critical interpersonal skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administration. Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Demonstrated ability to provide effective teaching and/or program development and delivery skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills and use of technologies such as Google Suite. Demonstrated ability to assist in providing effective academic and student success services and to maintain a confidential environment, when appropriate.
Experience in academic advising, especially cross-curricular and/or with first-year students
