Position Description

The Academic Advisor provides academic advising for undergraduate students in these categories: new freshmen (for the first year), new undeclared transfers, continuing undeclared students, and students in academic difficulty. When needed, this position guides the students to various campus resources that provides academic and/or psychological counseling. The Academic Advisor manages advising caseload through accurate record-keeping and maintains relationships with assigned academic departments.


Responsibilities include but not limited to: provides quality academic advisement to assigned caseload; covers designated office walk-in hours; counsels students on academic issues and program progress; assists students in identifying and overcoming academic difficulties through thoughtful educational planning; evaluates individual student needs; aids students in establishing realistic and attainable academic goals; develops and maintains a strong communication line with academic departments and various student support divisions; conducts seminars/offers academic coaching through teaching a course to students on probation or in academic difficulty; preregisters incoming first-year students; presents information sessions; and assists students with registering during New Student Orientation.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree; and work background in a higher education setting working with students’ academic needs.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree with at least 18 hours of graduate work; work background in a higher education setting working with students by providing advising services and coordinating support services; and experience with Banner and Student Success Collaborative platform.
