The Advisor reports to the Director of Advising and Career Development in the Office of Student Affairs and Wellbeing and plays a critical role in providing support as well as academic and career development guidance that is essential to a successful medical student experience. Most importantly, this role oversees and directs the development of the students Phase 3: Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) which is integral part of the curriculum and a graduation requirement.
Provide individual and group advising and career development services to 75+ medical students including medical specialty exploration, residency application, goal setting, course selection, clerkship scheduling, academic support, career planning, personal advising, and locating resources. Meet with students individually on an approximately quarterly basis to assist with developing each student's Individualized Learning Plan and Phase 3. Serve as the main point of contact for referring medical students to additional career and personal support resources from the School of Medicine, the Hackensack Meridian Health Network, and community as needed. Develop, plan, and lead workshops and seminars on relevant career advising topics. Serve as primary contact for all faculty, clerkship director, and small group facilitator reporting concerns about students. Plan and carry out departmental projects as assigned by the Director of Advising and Career Development including: training Specialty Mentors in advising and mentoring skills, oversight of departmental programs, faculty development; working with Specialty Interest Groups, presenting programs during orientation, and preparing and reviewing reports. Research and identify best practices and future trends in order to continuously improve offerings to students. Serve on various committees within the School of Medicine including participation in Quality Improvement Projects aimed at curriculum development. Organize and input pertinent information into constituent management software. Prepare and manage training materials; communicate with internal/external trainers, volunteers, and attendees regarding training sessions and/or meetings; track all activities of student encounters; document and distribute evaluation materials. • Masters degree in Student Counseling, College Student Personnel, Psychology, Social Work, Education, Higher Education Administration, or a related field is required
• Minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience providing full-time advising or career development services in a University/College setting is required
• Ability to demonstrate exceptional skills in coordinating and working collaboratively with diverse groups to achieve complex objectives is required
• Ability to develop, manage and carry out projects with minimal supervision, utilizing best practices is required • Exceptional oral and written communication skills are required
• Must possess a demonstrated ability to manage, organize, and prioritize a workload of diverse tasks
• Strong computer and typing skills required, including expertise with Microsoft Office Suite: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Sharepoint, Access.
• Ability to type and compose correspondence, coordinate schedules and activities, exercise discretion and communicate effectively is required
• Must have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on a variety of tasks
• Excellent writing, grammatical, and proofreading skills are required.
• Must be a good listener, act in a sensitive and professional manner, and maintain confidentiality
• Must have interest in the healthcare field
• PhD or equivalent in Student Counseling, College Student Personnel, Psychology, Social Work, Education, Higher Education Administration, Education or a related field is preferred
• Experience in a medical school or working directly with pre-med students is preferred
• Experience in medical school operations is preferred
• Minimum of one (1) year of post-graduate and 5+ years of full-time work experience in academic or career advising is preferred
• Experience working with high functioning/honors students, pre-health advising and/or post-baccalaureate programs is preferred
