Position Description

The Assistant Director is a member of the Health Professions and Graduate School team, and specifically focuses on building relationships with healthcare-related community agencies, developing information on short-term training programs in the health care field, and coordinating the annual Graduate and Professional School Fair and visits by admissions representatives. The Assistant Director also carries a heavy pre-health advising appointment schedule; conducts individual and group career coaching appointments; plans and presents programs and workshops; and has direct contact with students on a daily basis in a variety of settings.  


Direct Service to Students (50%)

  • Advise and coach pre-health students as they explore, prepare for, and apply to health professions/programs, such as medical/dental/pharmacy school
  • Develop and deliver workshops and programming for pre-health and graduate school-bound students
  • Coach students one-on-one and in groups regarding career exploration and decision-making, preparation for professional/graduate school, and finding jobs and internships
  • Outreach to diverse student populations and offices that serve unrepresented students
  • Facilitate opportunities for pre-health students and student organizations to interact and engage with admissions representatives  

Community Engagement and Professional/Graduate School (30%)

  • Develop, maintain, and actively cultivate relationships with local and regional organizations to develop opportunities for health-related experiential learning
  • Oversee the planning and execution of  the annual Graduate and Professional School Fair 
  • Serve as resource for information on short-term health training programs offered at community colleges, hospitals, and health care agencies
  • Organize and coordinate informational events and activities to connect students to representatives from health and graduate schools  

Supervision and Contribution to Unit Mission and Values (20%)

  • Assess services and programs to determine student learning outcomes and facilitate continuous improvement Contribute to the design, creation, and maintenance of print and online resources
  • Serve as a liaison to designated departments and offices, in order to maintain relationships with campus partners and better meet the needs of the students they serve
  • Create and deliver presentations for a variety of audiences, including students, parents, campus partners and external colleagues
  • Serve on The Career Center, Student Affairs and/or campus committees, task forces, work groups, and advisory committees
  • Participate in professional development activities and associations

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • 1 year of work experience, which may include time as a graduate assistant
  • Experience that demonstrates understanding of diverse populations and knowledge of cultural differences
  • Experience creating and facilitating educational workshops and/or delivering public presentations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling, education, student affairs, human resources or related field 
  • Experience in higher education, career coaching/advising, and/or working with college students
  • Knowledge of admissions requirements and preparation strategies for graduate and professional programs
  • Experience that demonstrates understanding of career and student development theory and practice
  • Experience developing and maintaining professional relationships
  • Excellent verbal, public speaking, writing, and listening skills
  • Strong multi-cultural competence with sensitivity to differences and ability to engage diverse students, staff and stakeholders
  • Highly motivated to listen and respond to student needs
  • Demonstrated ability to learn, seek guidance, and receive feedback Ability to work independently and use sound judgement
