Position Description

Nebraska Wesleyan University seeks applications for a trained academic advising professional to provide academic advising services to students in the graduate and adult programs offered in all NWU locations (currently Lincoln and Omaha, as well as future online programs). As noted above, in addition to engaging in day-to-day advising responsibilities, the successful candidate will actively help to shape and implement enhanced advising initiatives as part of the emerging NWU strategic plan. Traditionally reporting to the academic deans, the assistant director may help to transition academic advising to faculty, and ultimately provide a supporting role, including by supporting advising for traditional undergraduate students.


• Develop and maintain robust orientation program and orientation webpage for incoming adult and graduate students
• Serve as first point of contact for students seeking campus resources, such as by maintaining in-person and virtual office hours in both Lincoln and Omaha
• Collaborate with other campus offices, including admissions and student life, to identify and address student needs and to connect students with campus services
• Guide adult and graduate students to select courses to optimize program benefits
• Periodically review plans of study to help students make timely progress to degree
• Work with program directors and chairs to guide scheduling of future course offerings
• Monitor and actively support student success, including by tracking persistence, retention, and other metrics for academic affairs and enrollment management
• Re-recruit and guide students in returning to NWU, in cases where studies were interrupted
• Serve as Campus Security Authority and ensure compliance with federal reporting requirements
• Assist Omaha faculty with needed resources including as liaison to IT tech support
• Depending on interest and ability, may serve as Title IX contact for Omaha site

Work Schedule This position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week, 12 months a year (typically M-F 8:00AM-5:00PM), but work hours will flex to serve students, faculty, and staff at the Omaha site during academic sessions (e.g., 10:00AM to 7:00PM) as needed. The position provides advising backup during the summer months to ensure continuity of care for students.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution required, with preference for a Master’s degree in a related area.
• Minimum two years of experience in a higher education setting
• Academic advising-specific credentials and/or evidence of academic advising experience
• Ability to engage with a variety of constituents (students, faculty, staff) from different backgrounds
• Evidence of innovation and proven results with respect to student persistence and retention is preferred.
• Excellent organizational skills; ability to execute multiple objectives concurrently
• Superior oral, interpersonal, and written communication skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, student or customer databases (e.g., Student Information System, CRM), and Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas)
• Ability to work with discretion regarding sensitive information.

• Ability to be flexible, as in willing to understand and accommodate students' evolving needs
• Ability to demonstrate good phone skills and electronic communications, including professional and timely responses to phone calls, emails, and texts.
• Ability to work evening hours when classes are in session, students are present, and for campus events
• Ability to assist faculty with basic teaching technology and to help escalate support requests for computer hardware and software in cooperation with IT
• Possession of a welcoming and hospitable spirit
