Position Description

A person in this position will serve as an advisor for students at the University of Georgia applying to medical schools (both allopathic and osteopathic). The position involves working with students on the process for gaining admission into medical school, coordinating with other UGA units that advise and support students applying to medical school, and coordinating programs and events to support students with an interest in applying to medical school. This person will also be the primary contact for pre-health students who seek help with writing their personal statement for their application and those who would like to set up mock interviews. This person will run workshops for pre-health students and will be charged to set up and maintain a pre-health alumni database and mentoring network to put current students in touch with near peers (those alumni who are now in professional schools and those who have recently graduated from those schools) and with local professionals for advice and shadowing opportunities. This person will also assist the other pre-health advisors with student appointment overflow, help manage caseloads for the advisors in the department, and will prepare materials for students as they explore various health careers. This position also serves as the Advisor to Alpha Epsilon Delta and the Pre-Professional Student Ambassadors.

Duties

50%
Meets with and advises prospective and current students on an individual basis. Also meets with other UGA advisors, faculty, and professional school admissions personnel. Assists students by answering questions on options, procedures, timetables, requirements, and deadlines for medical school. This person will also assist the other pre-health advisors with student appointment overflow, help manage caseloads for the advisors in the department, and will prepare materials for student as they explore various health careers.

Maintains hours for walk-in students to address general questions. Meets with prospective students.

Allocates time for responding to student questions submitted electronically (e.g., email) and disseminating information through the official Pre-Health Advising office list-serv.

Contributes to office resource materials (e.g., website, handouts, etc.) regarding dental/optometry school requirements and related components.

Assists Coordinator with programs and events to support students with an interest in applying to medical school.

This position also serves as the Advisor to Alpha Epsilon Delta and the Pre-Professional Student Ambassadors. Assists Coordinator with supporting the various premedical student organizations, including the Premedical Honor Society, American Medical Student Association (AMSA), and the School of Osteopathic Medicine Association (SOMA). 5% Professional Development—Attend any classes related to academic advising or related topics. This can include, but is not limited to, completing the Certificate in Academic Advising, attendance at national and regional meetings of the National Association for Advising the Health Professions (NAAHP), or attendance at fairs/conferences at other institutions in the region.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree; familiarity with FERPA and University of Georgia academic policies and procedures; ability to adapt quickly to changing policies and procedures; ability to handle sensitive information in a discreet and professional manner; demonstrated interpersonal skills while working under pressure and with individuals of varying cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Three years experience working with students within a higher education context; experience collaborating with external constituents; experience researching, interpreting, and applying policies and procedures; experience compiling data and preparing reports; experience prioritizing and managing several projects simultaneously and successfully; experience using on-line database systems; knowledge of course offerings and requirements of a specific area of academic study, especially those related to admissions requirements for these schools.
