Position Description

Northern Michigan University is seeking applications for a Student Success Specialist or Senior Student Success Specialist. There are two positions available with the potential to be filled at either the Student Success Specialist or Senior Student Success Specialist level consistent with the selected applicant's experience.

Duties

The Student Success Specialist assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of a program of support designed to aid in the retention and academic success of all students with an emphasis on students in academic programs in the assigned academic department(s). Advises and provides academic and non-academic support to assigned students and delivers support to students in any major or program. Assists the assigned academic department(s) with student recruitment efforts. The Senior Student Success Specialist assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of a program of support designed to aid in the retention and academic success of all students with an emphasis on students in academic programs in the assigned academic department(s). Advises and provides academic and non-academic support to assigned students and delivers support to students in any major or program. Assists the assigned academic department(s) with student recruitment efforts. Responsible for leading initiative(s) and/or program(s) essential to the Student Success and Wellness department (e.g., student success technology, academic support programs, wellness, assessment, training, mentoring, etc.).

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Student Success Specialist: Bachelor's Degree. One year of professional experience (including graduate assistant experience) with academic advising, admissions counseling, academic support programs, residence life, wellness, or other work that relates to student affairs. Senior Student Success Specialist: Bachelor's Degree with four years of professional experience (including graduate assistant experience) with academic advising, admissions counseling, academic support programs, residence life, wellness, or other work that relates to student affairs OR a Master's Degree with two years of professional experience (including graduate assistant experience) with academic advising, admissions counseling, academic support programs, residence life, wellness, or other work that relates to student affairs.

Required knowledge/skills/abilities: Student Success Specialist and Senior Student Success Specialist:
- Knowledge of college advising and retention strategies.
- Ability to relate to and effectively communicate with college students.
- Ability to understand the needs of college students.
- Ability to make effective referrals to college resources.
- Self-directed and able to work autonomously while also working effectively and collaboratively as a member of a team.
- Ability to interact with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff, and outside constituents in a manner which positively reflects upon the advising office, academic departments, and the university.
- Experience and skill with computer applications including word processing, email, spreadsheets and reporting.
- Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
- Effective public speaking skills.
- Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including weekends and evenings

Preferred Qualifications

Student Success Specialist and Senior Student Success Specialist:
- Master's Degree.
- Knowledge and experience working with at-risk students.
