Position Description

The Academic Advisor – Marketing, Recruitment and Retention Specialist – CNAS supports the faculty advisors, departments, and programs within the college; assists in the development of retention strategies for current students, visits with prospective students, meets with students interested in changing their majors to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects, and serves as SOAR advisor for the college. In addition this position helps to achieve college enrollment and recruitment goals by establishing and maintaining effective communication with targeted high schools and community colleges and developing and implementing recruitment activities.


1. Helps to develop and manage an annual marketing and communication plan for the college to aid in recruitment and retention of students. Helps to develop and coordinate retention goals for the college including advising interventions for students on academic probation and suspend-return on probation and maintains contact with these students within the college and practicing pro-active advising to help all advisors within CNAS.
2. Prepares regular communication to STEM students related to deadlines and important dates to be distributed by the university.
3. Provides organization, student volunteer coordination and marketing skills for events that recruit students to STEM such as Missouri Junior Academy of Science, Regional Science Fair and Regional Science Olympiad.
4. Advises STEM undergraduate students and transfer students in CNAS.
5. Serves as an advisor for Student Orientation and Registration (SOAR) every summer, conducting both the advising session for students and parents and conducting individual academic advising.
6: Serves as a liaison with the Career Center, helps promote workshops for STEM students (with the Career Center), including but not limited to, resume writing and preparing for interviews, to prepare them for career fairs.
7: Serves as one of the college liaisons with the STEM Living Learning Community as part of a regular rotation of staff and promotes the University and CNAS through participation in professional organizations and Master Advisor activities.

Required Qualifications


Education: A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.

Experience: At least one year of experience in working with the public is required. Experience in recruitment, marketing, public relations, and/or advisement at the university or college level is preferred.

Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills are required. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required. The ability to work effectively with a diverse student population is required. Computer literacy is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required. Knowledge and expertise in the use of marketing communication tools, including digital marketing and social media or the desire to learn these skills is required.

Other: Maintains Master Advisor status. The scope of this position requires occasional overnight travel and the ability to lift and carry materials and equipment of awkward shape weighing up to 40 pounds. The position requires standing for long periods of time at trade shows, presentations, and job fairs.
