Position Description

The Academic Advisor interviews and advises students regarding information, procedures and academic requirements of a specific program or major. Provides academic guidance and program information to students in the assigned college or program. Assists students in exploring careers, evaluating academic abilities, and setting goals. This particular position is at the College of Computing and Software Engineering. .


Provides academic advising services to assigned students and/or college Prepares advising materials such as student information, advising guides and recruitment materials Utilizes predictive analytics and academic advising resources to make data-informed decisions that positively affect student success Presents academic information to orientation groups and potential students and parents Fosters student success through retention, progression, and graduation initiatives Assists students in creation of short and long-term curricular and co-curricular goals Communicates with and supports students regarding academic difficulties and academic probation processes Confers with prospective and current transfer students Documents interactions with students per established guidelines Works collaboratively with the academic advising community and with campus partners Develops and maintains positive working relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators within and across academic units Facilitates recruitment and orientation activities for the assigned college Represents the assigned college on appropriate campus committees or promotional events

Required Qualifications


Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree and previous academic advising experience
  • Able to access to confidential student information
  • Ability to interact effectively with students
  • Participates in ongoing professional development activities that enhance academic advising outcomes
  • Able to work evenings and weekends to support
  • College initiatives, events and/or activities
  • Able to deal with multiple tasks or projects at one time meeting assigned deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management and presentation skills
  • Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e. Banner, Nolij, EAB, Microsoft Office Suite, and other systems related to student support)
  • Strong attention to detail and follow up skills
  • Strong customer service skills and phone and e-mail etiquette
