Position Description

Reporting to and under the general supervision of the Academic Program Manager, the Professional Academic Advisor is responsible for working as a team member and performs a variety of academic advising services to first-year, second year, and transfer students of designated majors in the College of Arts and Sciences. This includes collaborating with students on their individualized educational pathways, creating academic plans and schedules, assisting in declaring majors/minors, and supporting students in making decisions concerning their learning experiences, academic goals, persistence, and timely graduation. The incumbent works collaboratively with other professional academic advisors, faculty, university staff, administrators, and coaches to support the educational experience of the students, as well as perform other activities related to student success and academic advising. This position will be for the length of three years with the potential of becoming renewable pending budget and performance.

Duties

Professional Academic Advising (80%)
Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquires according to established policies and procedures. Provide academic advising to students regarding general education, degree requirements, academic standing, appropriate course selection, relevant policies and procedures, e-advising tools, and campus resources. Maintain confidential and objective advising records. Serves as a main point of contact for students in the College of Arts and Sciences and provides information about educational options and academic requirements. Provide holistic, proactive, and meaningful guidance for students on acclimating to their new academic lifestyle and building supportive personal environments and best practices to facilitate their student success. Build and maintain strong relationships with faculty department chairs for assigned majors. Utilize early warning alert mechanisms and predictive analytics to properly advise students, follow up with advisees identified as at-risk through reporting campaigns, and assist students encountering academic difficulty. Programming (20%)
Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college. Support projects and initiatives within the Student Success Center Participate in campus visit days, New Student Registration, Week of Welcome, etc. Serve on department, division, and campus advisory committees and task forces as appropriate. Perform other secondary duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in related field from an accredited institution of higher education. Two years of professional experiences in a student services program area or a related field. Experience working with and advocating for students from underrepresented populations. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of practices, procedure, and trends of student success and academic advising programs. Strong oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Counseling, Student Affairs, Education, or related field. Experience with student information systems and databases (PeopleSoft, EAB Navigate, Starfish, or equivalent)
