Position Description

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
Working as part of a growing team in our newly formed Student Success Center, our Student Success Advisor will develop and provide programs and services for students, staff, and faculty that foster excellence in the student experience at UNCW and position them for success as they continue in their chosen career paths. We seek caring individuals who are passionate about and dedicated to helping students identify and achieve their educational and career goals.

Duties

Student Success Advisors work collaboratively with other units across campus (e.g., the Career Center, University College, etc.) to
(a) provide academic advising;
(b) support program recruitment and admissions;
(c) provide major, career, and graduate school guidance;
(d) support internship, clinical, and field placement for students;
(e) perform assessment, monitoring, and reporting related to these services; and
(f) develop other services and programs that will foster student and alumni success.
Some weekend and evening work, as well as travel, is required for recruitment activities and provision of services at our Onslow campus. Student Success Advisors should have the ability to be flexible in a changing, fast-paced environment.

Primary purpose of the division, department, and/or grant The Student Success Center in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) works to develop and provide programs and services for students, staff, and faculty that foster excellence in the student experience at UNCW and position students for success as they continue in their chosen career paths. The center houses caring individuals who are passionate about and dedicated to helping students identify and achieve their educational and career goals.

The Student Success Center works collaboratively with other units across campus (e.g., the Career Center, University College, etc.) to
(a) provide academic advising;
(b) support program recruitment and admissions;
(c) provide major, career, and graduate school guidance;
(d) support internship, clinical, and field placement for students;
(e) perform assessment, monitoring, and reporting related to these services; and
(f) develop other services and programs that will foster student and alumni success.
The Student Success Center acts as an “accelerator network” for these services and programs across the College, and thus should have the ability to be flexible in a changing, fast-paced environment. College/School Information The College of Health and Human Services was created in July 2010 to provide UNCW with a new mechanism to link and focus its health-related research, professional continuing education, and health knowledge dissemination and application. In the formative stage of development, the CHHS is currently home to three professional schools: School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Social Work. The College seeks to be nationally recognized for its inter-professional and collaborative approach to enhancing the health and quality of life of individuals, families, and communities in southeastern North Carolina and beyond. Required Qualifications

Minimum Requirements
This position requires post-baccalaureate credentials (e.g., master’s degree or higher), although a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis. List the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position Applicants must
(1) hold a master’s degree in higher education student affairs or hold a master’s degree with at least 5 years of related work experience with a university or college setting;
(2) possess strong communication, interpersonal, organizational skills;
(3) have the ability to manage time effectively in a busy environment; and
(4) possess a working knowledge of technology necessary to deliver student success programs and services.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred formal education, professional skills and work experience
Preference will be given to candidates who have
1) three (3) years of work experience related to one of the responsibility areas listed above,
2) experience with one or more of the academic program areas represented in our professional schools, and
3) experience working with student success programs and services for online programs.
