Position Description
The Student Success Advisor provides professional advising and additional support services within the Center for Student Success to facilitate Carthage students’ successful transition to the College and ongoing academic success and persistence through graduation. Center for Student Success staff work closely with other college personnel to holistically address the academic, developmental, and social needs of students, with particular focus on supporting underrepresented/underserved student populations.

Duties
1.Provide high touch, developmental advising to approximately 125-150 incoming first-time freshmen in a designated academic division during their initial transition to Carthage. Establish an intentional relationship with each advisee and register them for first semester courses in an accurate and timely manner as they shape their unique educational pathway. Collaborate with faculty advisors and career specialists to facilitate students’ smooth transition to these additional resources as they confirm their programs of study and explore personal and professional interests.
2.Prepare for and teach approximately five to six assigned sections of College Success Seminar during the fall term for incoming advisees with the goal of supporting them through their transition and moving them toward responsibility for their own academic goal achievement. One additional section of College Success Seminar may be assigned for the spring term.
3.Provide case management and advising support for students in a designated academic division to increase their likelihood of academic success. Utilize alerts, probationary statuses, account holds, low mid-term grades, and other signifiers to identify and prioritize student retention concerns; facilitate successful interventions; and connect students with appropriate resources. Work closely with academic deans and department chairs to become knowledgeable about their curriculum, share knowledge of policies and procedures, and provide professional advising support when appropriate.
4.Coordinate programming and outreach for a designated underrepresented/underserved student population that recognizes and meets their unique challenges in a higher education environment. Assist with strategic planning for this population, including strategic internal and external partnerships, identification of supplemental resources, development opportunities for faculty and staff, and/or student advocacy as appropriate. Populations may include first-generation, international, DACA/undocumented, military-affiliated, commuter, and adult students.
5.Lead the Center for Student Success staff in coordination of a designated project, establishing timelines and roles, ensuring a successful program, and strategizing areas for future improvement. Projects may include New Student Registration, College Success Seminar curriculum, social media, Peer Coaching, ProHabits or Carthage Academic Achievement Program. Actively participate in the implementation of other projects led by colleagues in the department.
6.Maintain timely and accurate recordkeeping of advising meetings, College Success Seminar attendance, and other data points for departmental reporting. Oversee initial data entry for incoming students related to their program of study to ensure their profiles are set up correctly upon enrollment.
7.Fulfill a variety of assigned administrative responsibilities to accomplish individual and departmental goals, as well as other administrative and operational duties as assigned. Some of these responsibilities may include serving students during drop-in hours, contributing to campus committees and learning communities, and assisting during staff vacancies.
