Position Description

The Sr. Associate Dean for Student Success will oversee a new student success unit at the University of Miami that integrates undergraduate student onboarding, advising, success coaching, and advocacy by supporting nearly 13,000 students across nine schools and colleges on two campuses. As a visible and engaged member of the University of Miami community, the Associate Provost will provide a vision and institutional oversight to develop and implement policies, programs, services, and strategies that achieve the University's student success goals and that increase academic support and student engagement, retention, and graduation. They will be a champion for student success across all undergraduate academic programs and will lead the assessment of activities and programs created to improve student success. They will foster collaborative partnerships with faculty, staff, and administrators.

Duties

1. Cultivate a cohesive student success network by collaborating with the dean of undergraduate affairs, academic school/colleges/departments leadership, sr. vice president for student affairs and alumni engagement, and other leaders across the institution (e.g., Division of Enrollment Management, Division of Student Affairs, Office of the Registrar, Toppel Career Center, Athletics, etc.).

2. Lead the development and implementation of student success initiatives and programs.

3. Provide leadership in standardizing student success tools, data reporting, and procedures to ensure students receive consistent, proactive support across all units.

4. Develop short-term and long-term goals and key performance indicators to improve student achievement, engagement, progression, retention, and graduation. Establish targets and expected outcomes.

5. Maintain continuous evaluation of retention and graduation efforts and the student experience.

6. Oversee the student success unit’s operations and regularly monitor operational performance and effectiveness.

7. Provide leadership to strengthen the ability of student support units to make proactive, data-informed decisions through better access to vetted, timely, and operationalized data by identifying metrics and student performance indicators to determine effectiveness of student success efforts and also providing leadership in discontinuing, improving, and/or redirecting resources to improve results.

8. Research, stay apprised of, and disseminate University policies/legislation and student success best practices.

9. Identify internal policies that may be barriers to student success and work with campus partners to remove these barriers.

10. Monitor how programs, processes, course offerings, and classroom space impact students and take appropriate action when needed.

11. In partnership with the IT and Institutional Research and Strategic Analytics departments, provide leadership in building and maintaining systems for student success data, leveraging performance indicator tools, analyzing data, and sharing results at regular intervals with academic schools and colleges and other university constituents and plans for timely interventions.

12. Demonstrate a commitment to evidence-based practice by using data to make decisions, celebrate successes, and communicate priorities. Regularly modify evidence-based strategies and programs to account for changing landscapes, policies, and student needs.

13. Be a leader and active participant in the selection and design of technological solutions, ensuring relevant stakeholders are included in the development process.

14. Supervise the student success team, with responsibility for the hire, training, professional development, and evaluation of direct reports.

15. Responsible for fiscal oversight of the student success unit, including budget development and management. 16. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

• A master’s degree from an accredited institution, terminal degree preferred.

• Effective leadership in student success within an academic unit/department with demonstrated results and increasing levels of responsibility.

• Experience using and analyzing data to lead, develop, and evaluate strategic initiatives that improve student success.

• Knowledge of best practices for fostering student success and implementing change across an organization.

• A successful track record of consensus building, and collaborative approaches to leading complex student success initiatives.

• Strong oral and written communication skills with experience creating and delivering effective presentations to internal and external audiences.

• Demonstrated ability to listen, to synthesize information from a variety of constituents, and use that information to build consensus and/or make decisions.

• Experience working with diverse populations and in promoting inclusive excellence in programs, policies, and practices.

• Evidence of effective management of budget and unit resources.

• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to effectively prioritize, coordinate and/or facilitate multiple projects and deadlines independently or with limited supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

• A minimum of five years of effective leadership in higher education with demonstrated results and increasing levels of responsibility working in an academic setting.

• Demonstrated effectiveness leading student success initiatives in a large, complex environment.

• Experience with program development, assessment, and improvement.

• Knowledge of student information systems such as Peoplesoft and EAB Navigate.
