CAS Standards for Academic Advising Programs (AAP).
The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) is a consortium of 41 professional associations concerned with the creation and promotion of professional standards for the development, assessment, and improvement of quality student learning, programs, and services. NACADA has been actively involved in CAS since 1981 and is represented on the Council by Wendy Troxel and Karen Sullivan-Vance.
To support the use of standards in advisors' professional endeavors, NACADA provides complimentary access to the CAS Standards for Academic Advising (AAP) for members (NACADA members must be logged in to access the 2023 standards document).
CAS standards are used by colleges and universities across the globe as benchmarks for program assessment. The Standards (the 'must' statements in bold print) are baseline expectations for programs. The Guidelines for Practice (the 'should' statements in regular print) are a road map to program excellence. Members will also find the CAS domains and dimensions (in Part 2) helpful in crafting student learning outcomes.
Find out more about CAS at www.cas.edu where you will find other functional area standards (e.g., transfer programs), cross-functional standards (e.g., first-year experience programs), and self-assessment guides (helpful for program review).
