Position Description
The Academic Advising and Retention Coordinator for the Portland-Metro Campus provides academic advising and faculty support to all Portland-Metro campus programs. The coordinator collaborates on retention initiatives to ensure student success and persistence, providing educational guidance from the first term through graduation. Effective and respectful communication and working with people of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds are key components of the position along with a strong commitment to the principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Access.
Duties
Responsible for providing students with educational guidance and assistance through graduation and serves as a key advocate for student academic concerns to senior administration. Requires the application of both professional knowledge and judgment, as well as experience, to apply the principles, techniques, and skills characteristic of student advising and retention services. Assist the Advising and Retention Director & Assistant Director with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Oregon Tech initiatives; eliminate equity gaps and decrease time to degree; promote access, academic achievement, and graduation of undergraduate students.

Who We Serve The Office of Academic Advising and Retention serves all current Oregon Tech students in different capacities as they progress through their degrees at Oregon Tech. Secondary Academic advisors are assigned to most students. Students can check who your secondary Academic Advisor is, when you check your registration information on Web for Student. TOP students, will have a secondary advisor assigned from that department. Non-degree-seeking students can reach out to the department or the Registrar’s Office for assistance in registration and course selection. How Secondary Academic Advising Works At Oregon Tech students have both a Faculty Advisor in the applicable program and a secondary Academic Advisor within the Office of Academic Advising. The Faculty Advisor is there to talk to students about their field of study, course content, and give final approval on the courses they plan to take each term. Secondary Academic Advisors are in place to connect with students with their faculty advisor, give general advising, and assist students in finding and using campus resources effectively; they are the students’ best contact for understanding school policies and procedures, managing logistical issues, as well as, answering general questions about how to navigate the university. https://www.oit.edu/students/advising

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
> Bachelor’s degree
> Experience advising students within a college, performing analytics and promoting retention strategies.
> Demonstrated ability to work independently and proactively develop initiatives with minimal supervision.
> Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences through various mediums.
> Experience counseling, advising, and/or mentoring college students with declared majors.
> Experience with student success initiatives.
> Excellent written and oral communication skills.
> Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite.
> Proficiency in data analytics with ability to create complex spreadsheets and develop initiatives based on the data.
Preferred Qualifications
> Master’s degree
> Experience, background or demonstrated interest in a related polytechnic fields
> Successful experience enforcing and explaining complex academic policies
> Experience collaborating with staff, faculty and administrators in higher education
> Experience with student retention success strategies
> Demonstrated ability to independently develop advising and retention strategies using data-driven decision making based on complex data analytics
> Experience working with staff, faculty and administrators in higher education.
