September Ten Talk | Research and Scholarship in Advising

Tom Liljegren, Utah State University and Region 10 Scholarship/Research Coordinator, and Carita Harrell, Arizona State University
1 p.m. central | Wednesday, September 27

Higher education went through many drastic changes during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, and so did academic advising. This study of advisors experience during this time helps us see what opportunities and challenges that we have faced, and where we stand today. This is also a chance to see the results of a study conducted by advisors from Region 10 and is an example of how advisors can both get involved in research and can use the results of research in their own advising practice.

November Ten Talk | Kasserian Ingera: Black Student Mental Health and Wellbeing

Treya Allen, University of Arizona
1 p.m. central | Wednesday, November 15

Kasserian Ingera is a greeting of the Masaai peoples of East Africa that translates to "And how are the children?" This question is less about children and more about the functioning of a society. The same is true of Black students and their wellbeing on PWI campuses. The functioning and mental wellbeing of Black students can provide an accurate climate of mental wellbeing for students on college campuses. This presentation invites participants to tap into culturally centered and specific practices and ways of knowledge to better serve Black students with implications for other communities as well.
