Position Description

Summer Search Bay Area is seeking a Temporary College Access Associate (CAA) to support Summer Searchers in post-secondary exploration and preparation. Our community is spread across the entire Bay Area region, and this position will be supporting students from Solano and Napa counties (including Vallejo, American Canyon, St. Helena and Calistoga). The CAA will support students through the college going process including assessing academic progress and college readiness, advising on best-fit college choices, guiding students through college applications and the financial aid process. In addition to college advising, the CAA will also support students in other post-secondary pathways such as enrichment programs and employment.

This is a temporary position with the possibility of becoming a full-time non-exempt position with benefits after 10/1/19 (the start of our new fiscal year). Our hope is to bring someone into this temporary role and support their development and growth into a full-time position pending budget approval. This will offer the most continuity and highest quality of support for our students. Candidates who are interested in this longer term opportunity will be prioritized.

Duties

Specifically, the College Access Associate will perform these responsibilities:

  • Provide holistic, 1-1 individualized post-secondary advising to a caseload of 15-20 students, developing and implementing plans that are specific to each student’s needs and strengths.
  • Support students through the college application and financial aid application process via college workshops and 1-1 sessions.
  • Operate with an awareness of challenges commonly faced by first-generation and/or low-income students, bringing sensitivity, humility, and understanding to all interactions with students and their families.
  • Research student support resources and post-secondary opportunities with the interest of developing, maintaining and distributing across the team.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the High School and College Access programs to identify and address how to best support each student towards post-secondary success.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and refinement of the College Access program through collaborating with regional and National office staff, as well as participate in trainings in the field of college access/success, particularly for first-generation, low-income students.
  • Participate in events for students and their families throughout the school year, including travel to schools within the full Bay Area region (especially within the North Bay).
  • Consistently utilize Salesforce database to track key data and monitor progress towards multiple post-secondary goals including points of service entries.

Institution Information

While young people from low-income communities – who are disproportionately young people of color – face systemic inequities in school, in the workforce, and in life, they possess unique strengths, resilience and tremendous potential. When provided with support and resources, these young people fulfill their potential and achieve success in school, work and life. Through a combination of mentoring and transformative experiences, Summer Search supports young people to successfully transition from adolescence into adulthood. We aim to unleash the potential of our young people while also building a toolkit for navigating and challenging systemic barriers to higher education and career opportunities.
