Director of First Year Advising Center
APPOINTMENT: April 1, 2023 RESPONSIBILITIES: Western Illinois University seeks a collaborative and student focused leader to serve as the Director of First Year Advising. The position, which reports to the Executive Director of Retention Initiatives, will be responsible for the oversight, coordination, development, and supervision of activities and initiatives within the First Year Advising Center which has direct responsibility for advising first year students, conditionally admitted students, dually enrolled students, and students within the University Advising program. The Director of First Year Advising coordinates the implementation of new student registration processes and coordinates the administrative and financial affairs of the department. The position supervises full time, graduate, and paraprofessional staff and provides direct advisement to students through an active caseload. The Director of First Year Advising will serve as a core member of the Retention Initiatives Leadership Team in the Division of Enrollment Management. This position is located on WIU's Macomb campus. Provide overall supervision and evaluation of professional academic advisors, clerical, and graduate staff, along with the student workers, volunteers and leaders associated with the department. Direct the leadership, planning, policy development, and day-to-day operation of First Year Advising Center including University Advising Program, Reach Advising program, Dual Enrollment Advising program, and other advising related needs. Develop, coordinate, and implement strong communication between the First Year Advising Center team and department chairs, advisors, and colleges. Serves as member of Retention Leadership Team including day-to-day collaboration with the Transition and Academic Skills Center, Office of Retention Initiatives, and Center for Career Preparation and Employer Engagement. Develop and maintain assessment and programmatic efforts related to new student registration, advising, and orientation experience. Monitor both pre-registration and registration, working in partnership with Academic Advisors, Chairs and Directors, Deans, and the Provost's Office concerning enrollment issues including: enrollment management, course overloads, enforced prerequisites, and granting special permissions on restrictions. Coordinate and implement new student registration and pre-registration processes. Advise students (enrolled, reentry, and prospective) pursuing degrees at Western Illinois University and within the High School Dual Enrollment program. Serve on divisional and university committees Represent First Year Advising Center and/or Retention Initiatives on various internal/external committees.
