Position Description

As a member of the College of Forestry Student Services Office, the Academic Advisor supports COF undergraduates’ academic planning and success using developmental advising skills. They interpret and explain university academic policy and procedure, and assist students in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to graduation. The College of Forestry (COF) is one of OSU’s 11 colleges, comprised of three departments offering undergraduate and graduate degrees to a student body of approximately 1300 students. As the top-ranked University-level Forestry program in the country, it is a primary resource for information on forest-related issues and education. This position will provide academic advising to an assigned caseload of approximately 275 undergraduate degree-seeking students in the College of Forestry. Advising assignments may include a mix of students enrolled at the Corvallis campus and online learners in OSU’s Ecampus. Advising assignments by major and/or campus can be adjusted as necessary to meet student advising needs as student headcount changes. The Advisor reports to the Manager of Advising & Academic Relations/Head Advisor. All duties include working with diverse student populations representing a variety of backgrounds, needs, and skills. Important aspects of the work include developmental advising; strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; attention to detail; technical skills; a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and collaboration with other units within the College and the University.

Duties

80% - Provide one-on-one academic advising for undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students. This includes the following duties:

  • Help students match their personal strengths and interests with opportunities within the curricula; develop a sense of purpose in their education; identify and address issues that impact their academic experience; integrate their education, career and life plans; and understand how to complete their degree requirements.
  • Advise on course selection, prerequisite requirements, and registration procedures to support students’ timely degree completion.
  • Review and evaluate transfer credits and their applicability to degree requirements. This includes assisting students with petition processes.
  • Interpret and clarify college and university policies and procedures to assist students in decision making.
  • Monitor student progress toward the COF work experience requirement (if applicable), making referrals, answering questions, and documenting completed experiences in the student record.
  • Participate in new student orientation programs, primarily by conducting advising appointments with new students and assisting them with first-term course registration.
  • Collaborate with COF and OSU colleagues to refer students to resources to support their success (examples include Academic Success Center, Cultural Resource Centers, Counseling & Psychological Services, Student Health Services, Disability Access Services, Military & Veteran Services, Career Development Center, Basic Needs Center, Financial Aid, etc.).
  • Assist students in academic difficulty in constructing success plans. ? Participate on curriculum committee(s) to assess/recommend changes to curriculum and the impact to students.
  • Provide letters of recommendation for students enrolled in, or graduated from, the College of Forestry.
  • Complete NCAA compliance audits for COF student athletes as needed. ? Communicate with current and prospective students regarding the application process for COF’s Professional Program (“pro-school”). Evaluate application materials, make recommendations to the admissions committee and/or Department Head. Advise students of action necessary for admission and/or alternative pathways when appropriate.
  • Utilize software and information systems such as DegreeWorks, OnBase document management, Salesforce, Banner Student Information System, etc. to assist students and document their progress.
  • Maintain knowledge of, demonstrate commitment to, and participate in OSU’s first-year academic advising program. Guide students though shared intentional and integrative experiences informed by collaborative best practices for first year student success.

15% - Maintain accurate, secure, and up-to-date student records and detailed notes in DegreeWorks. Track student progress using the degree audit. Conduct preliminary and final degree audits for students approaching graduation.

5% - Participate in college and university committees, task forces, or work groups as appropriate and approved by the Head Advisor. Participate in a minimum of one workshop/activity/training annually (as approved by supervisor) that enhances individual commitment to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion; provides supervisor with a short report on how knowledge gained will be applied in day-to-day work. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in discipline of choice 
  • One year of academic advising experience or two years of education, experience, and training working with diverse populations of college students on issues such as advising, academic success, academic coaching, counseling, orientation, student support services, recruitment, or retention
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to effectively communicate across cultural boundaries and with diverse student populations with unique needs.
  • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the position and as a member of the College of Forestry community
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain student records accurately and with confidentiality
  • Ability to make decisions and solve problems
  • Ability to work independently as well as being a contributing member of the team
  • Adaptability and flexibility to work in a changing environment
  • Technical skills and experience with software for word processing, spreadsheets, database management, information management, and electronic tools that might be used to advise students (e.g. video-conferencing, online forms and workflows, digital documents)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Academic Advising, College Student Services, Higher Education Administration, Education, Counseling, or similar discipline
  • Demonstrated success supporting students from different backgrounds and experiences (including but not limited to transfer students, military-connected students, student parents, students of color, students with disabilities)
  • Education or experience in the fields of forestry, natural resources, recreation, wood science, or a related discipline
  • Experience advising online students
  • Experience with student information systems (e.g. Banner, CORE, CRM) and/or degree audit systems.
