Position Description

The Academic Success Coach in the Student Academic Success (SAS) center supports students from matriculation through graduation by conducting proactive, data-informed outreach for navigating social, academic and administrative aspects of the college environment. The focus is connecting individually with students, connecting students with their peers, interest groups and identity cohorts, and connecting students with professors and campus resources. This position bridges academic and co-curricular boundaries to develop students’ skills, knowledge and mindsets to enhance their academic, personal, and professional success.

Duties

1. Disability Services (30%) Serves as the University’s ADA Section 504/Title II Coordinator. Determine and arrange for appropriate accommodations for students on all campuses with documented learning, physical, and psychological disabilities. Serve as liaison to the students, parents, faculty, and staff who seek and/or support accommodations for disabilities. Meet regularly with students with disabilities, as needed. Provide training and support to faculty, staff, and students in matters related to disability awareness and services. Remain current on disability policy and law. Keep Baker policy manual current. Serve on Safety and Accessibility Committee.
2. Academic Advising and Coaching (60%) Serves as academic advisor and success coach to high-risk student populations, including: probationary students, new incoming students admitted by the ASEM process, and students identified by the Baker Outreach Network as at-risk. Develop communication and advising plans for these populations. Coach students individually, in small groups, and workshops on skills, knowledge, and mindsets proven to contribute to college success; assist in navigating college policies, procedures, and resources; help students explore values, strengths, and passions through a strengths-based advising approach. Maintain appropriate records and recommendations for students served. Share regular summaries of student outreach with necessary parties. Monitor student progress and coordinate services with campus partners. Reinforce and support the success of students’ relationships with their faculty academic advisors. Work collaboratively with units across the college to resolve student issues. Support university-wide retention and programming initiatives. Provide instruction in orientation and academic support courses.
3. Other (10%) Assist the Director of SAS in data collection and analysis on effectiveness of academic support initiatives and current procedures. Collaborate with the Director and other university offices in creating and improving technological functions for faculty and students to assist with the advising process. Continue professional development and maintain knowledge of up-to-date best practices through NACADA and other external professional resources.

Baker University is a 4-year, non-profit private liberal arts college, founded in 1858. We are located in Baldwin City, a small town 20 minutes south of Lawrence and 45 minutes from downtown Kansas City.

Additional Information

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree strongly preferred in academic advising, education, counseling, social work, student affairs, psychology, or related fields Knowledge of ADA regulations related to provision of accommodations to students with learning disabilities (preferred) Knowledge of academic advising techniques and best practices Intercultural competency and ability to work well with a wide variety of constituents, including faculty, administrators, staff, students, parents, as well as those with physical, learning and emotional differences
