Position Description

The Academic and Student Success Advisor supports and guides SPHTM online and residential graduate students from admission confirmation through matriculation with the goal of supporting students’ academic goals and increasing institutional persistence and retention rates. The Academic and Student Success Advisor achieves defined objectives by implementing and maintaining services in compliance with established guidelines; proactively fostering effective relationships and individualized mentorships to help students achieve their potential; and serving as a member of the Academic and Student Success & Office of Student Experience team. The Academic and Student Success Advisor maintains regular contact with students, using multiple communication platforms, such as phone, email, in person, and Zoom meetings.

Duties

• Working knowledge of federal regulations such as Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it relates to student accommodation.

• Proficient computer skills in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, electronic mail, and internet applications, preferably of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Knowledge of student risk factors, and ability to assess and provide high level reports during team meetings.

• Problem solving and analysis skills, and ability to create action plans that fall within the scope of the role and established guidelines.

• Ability to use resources as required to perform the daily expectations of serving students.

• Interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships quickly through phone, email and texting tools.

• Ability to adapt quickly to changing work priorities, set priorities, meet deadlines, be flexible, and work well under pressure.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate effectively to a diverse audience with emphasis on active listening and constructive support.

• Organizational skills and ability to work well with detailed information/data with strong attention to detail and accuracy.

• Ability to be self-motivated, enthusiastic, personable, assertive, dependable, and work independently and as a member of a team.

Founded as The Medical College of Louisiana in 1834 to train New Orleans doctors in the fight against yellow fever and cholera, Tulane has a long history at the forefront of groundbreaking research. As of September 18, 2024, we are the Tulane University Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine! Our name recognizes the landmark total lifetime giving of Celia Scott Weatherhead, a 1965 graduate of Tulane’s Newcomb College and a stalwart supporter of issues of public health and health equity. Our school was initially founded in 1912 when it became the very first school of public health in the United States. Tulane’s commitment to public health goes back even further, however, to 1834 when the university was founded to address concerns of cholera, yellow fever, smallpox, and malaria. The Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health continues to educate passionate students who want to make a difference in the health and well-being of populations around the globe. Located in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the curve of the Mississippi River, the Weatherhead School is at the epicenter of some of the most pressing issues facing public health today, like the intersection of climate change and health, the intractability of health inequities, and the re-emergence of tropical infectious diseases. Additional Information

Up to two remote days per week are allowed after training is completed, some exceptions apply throughout the year. This position occasionally requires evening and/or weekend work for events like Commencement, OSE events, and office coverage for tutoring appointments.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree

• 1 year of directly related experience, preferably in a higher education institution providing student support services

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Public Health, Higher Education Administration, or other social science.

• Knowledge of graduate students and graduate student experience.

• Professional experience with problem solving and conflict resolution.
