Position Description

The Advising Manager is part of the leadership team in the Office of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Computer Science, the largest major on campus that includes 3500+ undergraduate students. This individual will supervise professional Academic Advisors who may directly supervise student workers, be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks, and advise a caseload of students.

Duties

Specific duties include:

  • Supervision of 3 - 4 full-time Academic Advisors and student workers
  • Advise a caseload of 250-300 undergraduate Computer Science students
  • Serve in a management role of departmental exception to policy requests
  • Hold a management role in at least one administrative task with high impact to team
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies with day-to-day operations of the office
  • Lead by example and serve as a role model for team members embodying our core values
  • Promote the professional development and pursuit of career goals for Academic Advisors
  • Attend leadership and college level meetings as needed

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in higher education, academic advising, student personnel administration, or counseling. One (1) year leading or supervising professional staff.

Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of policies, procedures, and institutional purpose and goals. Knowledge of best practices in recruitment, retention, and customer service. Knowledge of best practices in organization and administration. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products. Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments. Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws. Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree in higher education or related field is preferred.

Experience: Current or former employee of University of Maryland, College Park is preferred. 3 – 5 years of full-time advising experience in higher education. 1 – 3 years of supervisory experience managing a professional staff of 3+ employees Experience in advising in computer science or related fields is a plus. Knowledge of UMD degree requirements and advising technology platforms (i.e. Salesforce, SIS, UAchieve) is a plus.
