Position Description

The Assistant Director for Academic Advising, reporting to the Associate Provost for Advising and Student Success, is part of a dynamic team committed to holistic student success. The person in this role will deliver a world-class experience to help students identify, confirm, and pursue their authentic interests while supporting faculty advisors in proactive, informed relationship-building and advising. The Assistant Director collaborates with cross-campus partners to assist students in their transition into the Dickinson community, fostering a sense of belonging for both advisees and their advisors. Duties

Essential Functions:

- Meet individually with students on academic probation to provide guidance and support to help them meet their academic goals and ensure good standing at the College. Work with students to identify areas where they can improve their academic performance, such as time management, study skills, and test-taking strategies, and provide appropriate resources and tools to help them overcome such challenges. Meet with students to monitor their progress and adjust as needed. Provide support and encouragement to help them stay motivated and on track.

- Develop, implement, and assess processes and procedures in support of academic advising. Examples include:

A) Manage the change of advisor process, which includes reviewing the needed changes, conferring with academic departments, assigning new advisors, collaborating with other departments to ensure effective communication and coordination of services, and communicating changes to students and relevant stakeholders;

B) Manage the new student advising program, ensuring every entering student meets 1-1 with an advisor before matriculation. Coordinate advising appointments for approximately 700 students and communicate closely with students and their faculty advisors, ensuring all necessary enrollment tasks are accomplished; C

) articulation agreements;

D) policy review and revision.

- Design and coordinate the College’s Probationary Support programs, Fall Bridge and STEPS. Create syllabus and plan weekly (non-credit bearing) classes, including coordinating presenters, compiling course materials, and planning content.

- Provide short and long-term support for students experiencing acute and ongoing academic, wellness and personal challenges. Monitor students’ academic progress; meet to review progress and identify or address issues as they arise, utilizing data to proactively help students maximize their success in college. Ensure that students are familiar with the College’s opportunities, academic policies, and procedures and provide guidance on degree and graduation requirements.

- Assist a caseload of approximately 25 transfer and undeclared students, and also handle walk-in undeclared appointments. Monitor students’ academic progress; meet to review progress and identify or address issues as they arise, utilizing data to proactively help students maximize their success in college. Provide additional support, such as referrals to other resources on campus. Ensure that students are familiar with the College’s academic policies and procedures and provide guidance on degree requirements and graduation requirements.

- Advise Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) first-year academic honor society. Alpha Lambda Delta is an academic honor society where approximately 20% of Dickinson students are involved and actively engaged. Meet weekly with ALD executive board members to provide guidance and support as they plan and organize events such as induction ceremonies, service projects, and social/educational activities. Encourage executive board leadership through active participation in the planning and execution of events.

Required: Master’s Degree 7 or more years experience in a related field (such as guidance counseling, student affairs) may substitute for all or some of the required education. 3-5 Years Work Experience
