Position Description
Position Title: Centralized Academic Advisor
Salary: $62,525 - $67,500
Position Summary: Working out of a Centralized Advising Office, Academic Advisors will be responsible for managing a caseload of students through targeted and intentional exchanges. By applying a holistic model of support and following best practices, Academic Advisors will engage students throughout their time at Manhattan University. Academic Advisors will pay special attention to a student’s transition into their degree, and empower them to achieve educational success during their first year of studies. Students will move to a faculty advisor once they have achieved satisfactory academic progress and, where applicable, chosen a major. Academic Advisors are cross trained across one or more of the academic schools. Under the guidance of the Associate Director of Academic Advising, Advisor will:
- Register all new incoming college students, providing them with a schedule in a timely manner
- Foster a welcoming and supportive transition for first-year students Provide tailored advising to a caseload of 175-250 students, maintaining individual student records
- Follow guidance to effectively prioritize student meetings and triage their needs
- Assist students to identify their barriers and obtain resources to overcome them
- Facilitate a smooth transition for students to their faculty advisors Maintain an open-door policy to all students through to graduation
- Collaborate on developing and administering orientation and other student programming efforts for incoming first-year students
- Coordinate with campus stakeholders to secure opportunities across campus for all students, including those students with disabilities
- Participate in the development of web pages
- Disseminate student and faculty resources related to academic advising
- Participate in professional development to ensure Manhattan University is providing evidence-based and best practices in advising and student support
- Assist with student analysis, program evaluation, and assessment efforts
- Advisors may be required to work one alternative schedule each week to facilitate evening opening hours until 6:00pm
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and one (1) year or more of previous experience in a higher education institution in one or more of the following areas:
- Advising; student recruitment/retention, student development; program retention; orientation/ first-year programming or a related area in higher education supporting college student success
- Experience working with college students from underrepresented backgrounds, including but not limited to, Latinx, Pell-eligible and other underrepresented identities in higher education
- Ability to relate well with college students, faculty, staff, administration
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Willing to work evenings and weekends as required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Direct experience in academic advising in a higher education setting preferred
- Master’s degree in higher education administration, public administration, educational leadership, psychology, or other related field
- Fluency in Spanish
